Intel i340 Quad port NIC Working (VLAN's included)?
-
Can anyone confirm that the latest Intel Quad port nic is working with pfSense v2.0 builds? If not, anyone willing to help post a bounty? Going with the newer cards vs the old Pro1000's is going to save me over $150/card….and I need 2 cards right now, and more in the future. I'm willing to donate the difference to save future costs, but I'm not sure $300 is enough of a bounty to get this going ASAP.

It's not going to work, not unless you compile a driver and copy it over yourself.

Hi!
It's not going to work, not unless you compile a driver and copy it over yourself.
Is there an (preferable up-to-date) howto that describes what is needed in order to do that?
(Things like required FreeBSD version & any special quirks needed to make it work with PfSense…)
Thank you and have a nice day!

Google it.
If you are lucky, someone has done it for you and written it up clearly. (Intel web site? Intel contribute drivers for their NICs to FreeBSD.)
If you are a bit less lucky you will find a FreeBSD 8.1 driver for this device and you will have to figure out how to build it yourself. (The FreeBSD Handbook should be helpful.)
If you are a bit less lucky you will find a FreeBSD driver for this device but for later versions of FreeBSD than 8.1. Backporting could be straight forward (just a recompile) to challenging (the driver makes use of facilities in FreeBSD 8.2 or later but not in FreeBSD 8.1).
If you are even less lucky you won't find a FreeBSD driver but a Linux driver (or xBSD driver) and you will need to port the driver.
If you are unlucky you won't find any open source driver.

This is for pfSense 1.2.3. The only change for pfSense 2.0 should be the version of FreeBSD you need to install on your dev box (you'd want 8.1).

Thank you for your help guys, I'll make myself a VM with 8.1 and try it as soon as I get a chance (I had some unplanned problems this week both at home and at my parent's house which so I haven't yet had the chance to try it).
Thank you!
