I'm no newbie but this has me stumped.  I've installed pfsense a few times before, although not recently.

netopia DSL modem - pfsense 1.2.3 - LAN.  Simple setup, should be good to go.  I can ping everything outside from the command line but the gui gives me that error, "Unable to communicate to pfSense.com. Please check DNS, yada yada yada."  I've turned off "Allow DNS server list to be overridden by DHCP/PPP on WAN"  Changed DNS, etc, etc, testing off and on for two days and I get squat.

      Any ideas?

Are there any upstream proxies that might be interfering?

Can you load this URL from a PC on your LAN?

        http://www.pfsense.org/pfSense/pkg_tester.php

If you get a PHP array, it should work from the router.

You can also try this from the pfSense console:

        fetch -o - http://www.pfsense.org/pfSense/pkg_tester.php
