DLINK DSL-2520U as a modem
-
I had pfSense @ work, and thought of setting it up @ home as well.
I have an ADSL connection (PPPoE), connected to a DLINK DSL-2520U modem/router. I set the modem/router in Bridge mode, slapped it to my WAN interface on pfSense, set up WAN as a PPPoE interface, entered username and password. The DLINK device can see the DSL line (DSL LED on), but does not attempt any connections (as Internet LED should blink when trying to connect).
Was anyone successful with a similar setup?

You will probably find that the 'internet' LED is only relevant when using the modem as a full router.
When it's in bridge mode the modem itself doesn't know when the PPPoE session is active.
Check your pfSense logs to see if it's trying to connect.Sometimes you have to go to Status: Interfaces: in the GUI and click on connect next to your PPPoE interface if you've just created it.

Thanks for the quick reply. It does make sense that the "Internet" LED would not blink.
I checked /var/log/system.log and the following is a sample of it:
Nov 2 00:16:41 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 86 Nov 2 00:16:41 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] PPPoE: Skipping link "wan_link0" with undefined interface Nov 2 00:16:41 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] PPPoE node for link is not initialized Nov 2 00:16:41 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] Link: DOWN event Nov 2 00:16:41 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] LCP: Down event Nov 2 00:16:41 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 87 in 4 seconds Nov 2 00:16:45 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 87 Nov 2 00:16:45 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] PPPoE: Skipping link "wan_link0" with u ndefined interface Nov 2 00:16:45 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] PPPoE node for link is not initialized Nov 2 00:16:45 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] Link: DOWN event Nov 2 00:16:45 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] LCP: Down event Nov 2 00:16:45 pfsense ppp: [wan_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 88 in 4 seconds
While dmesg looks fine:
<--snip--> Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ad0s1a ugen1.2: <usb> at usbus1 ukbd0: <usb 0="" 2="" usb="" keykoard,="" class="" 0,="" rev="" 1.10="" 1.10,="" addr=""> on usbus1 kbd2 at ukbd0 uhid0: <usb 0="" 2="" usb="" keykoard,="" class="" 0,="" rev="" 1.10="" 1.10,="" addr=""> on usbus1 pflog0: promiscuous mode enabled em0: link state changed to UP rl0: link state changed to UP</usb></usb></usb>
However, when I go to "Status" > "Interfaces", then I click "Connect" I get a "Page Fault" and the system freezes. I don't know if this is related. Is there any other way I could get my hands on a more specific log?

Reformated, and reassigned interfaces, and everything seems to be perfect now.
Just for the record: I used the Setup Wizard instead of manually editing the interface settings.
Thanks (happy puppy)

Hmm,
Looks like it managed to get the PPPoE connection set to the wrong interface.
Glad you got it sorted. :)Steve
