Pfsense resolving machine names
-
Bit new to PFsense, in fact, I've only installed it twice.
I've installed the Squid (SquidGuard, Squid, and LightSquid) packages, and configured them perfectly okay, however, I'm having trouble getting it to resolve PC names - I've tried the DNS and SMB options, but both populate the "realname" with a question mark.
I suspect this is more to do with Squid than PFsense, but I cannot be the only one interested in machine names being resolved.
Anyone got it working, if so, was there anything that needed doing beyond the basic configuration?
Many thanks,
Terry

I presume you mean you are having trouble getting pfSense to resolve names of PCs on the LAN interface. Is that issue in pfsense itself resolving PC names (e.g. issuing a command on the pfSense console to ping a PC by name) or PCs on LAN resolving names of other PCs?
What name server are the LAN PCs (and/or pfSense) using?
How are you expecting the PC names to get into that name server?
What are you expecting to use as the name server?

Hi,
Yes, it is the PC's on the LAN interface I'm struggling to get resolved. I'm not sure if it's Pfsense or Squid, but when I ping a machine name (DCPW), it returns with a ping response from an IP address not issued inside the LAN - Being a 62.x.x.x and the LAN being 172.x.x.x
When you say name server, I assume you mean a DNS server? I've not seen a reference to anything else within PFsense - But again, relatively new to the PFsense world.
There's actually a domain controller (Yes, I am one of those fellows that runs a full on SBS domain at home), so ideally that.

What name server does this PC use?
On my network DCPW resolves to 67.215.65.132 which is the IP address of hit-nxdomain.opendns.com Open DNS is my name server and it resolves "unknown" hostnames to addresses which host a web server which displays some advertisements and suggestions for what the intended hostname might have been.

There are DNS records for the machine on the DC, and the DC is in PFSense as a DNS server.
Some machine names are resolving in Lightsquids reports, though, which is a touch confusing.
