Question about Inbound Load Balancing

I have setup a pool of servers that are listening on TCP port 29000. I have setup the virtual server as well. For some reason the firewall is showing these hosts as being down on port 29000. I have done a nmap and I see the ports open. I have also telneted to the port without issue.
How does PFSense check to see if the port is listening on the server?

How it checks depends on the monitor type you chose when setting up the pool. It can monitor a TCP connect, ICMP ping, and a few others ways.

Yes I get that part. However, I have a java application that is listening on port 29000. PFSense>Status>Load Balancer>Pools is showing it down. Is there a specific port range that PFSense will only do for load balancing?

no there are no limits. But if you chose the ICMP monitor type and the servers don't respond to ping, it would show down. That's why I said it depends on the type of monitor you selected when adding servers to the pool.
You might also make sure you're on 2.0.1, there were many fixes made to relayd (the Load Balancer daemon we use) after 2.0
