USB Live and 3G USB stick
-
Hi,
I'm new to pfsense, only have basics of *nix, and need a little help.I need to figure out whether or not pfsense recognizes my 3G wireless provider's USB stick before I can make a decision to use/not use pfsense.
So I am trying a "live install" - via a usb drive. I created the image, and it boots ok.
When I put in my 3G USB Stick, I see some things happen on the screen, but I can't tell if it's recognizing the storage or the modem.
At main menu, I tried the default (0 or 1 I forget), and #3 (boot via USB). Both bring me up to a "WAN autodetect or Name" prompt. I can't get any further than this, as I don't know any names for a WAN device, and autodetect doesn't give me anything because I'm not connected to a WAN - my 3G is my wan, and it needs a username/password to be entered for it to connect to the 3G network.
Seems like a chicken and egg… can someone point me in the right direction? thanks

What is the brand and model number of the modem. It might be known to work, or known to not work.

It would help if you provided what is displayed on the screen when you put in the modem.

Thanks for responding. I was on vacation and couldn't get back to this until now.
The model is Huawei K4505. I currently have it working on a draytek 2910 box. Per this other thread, I didn't see it in the list of known working (or not) modems.
If they aren't there, nobody has told us it works.
As for displaying what is on the screen, it's actually many many screens of information - the stuff that you see when Linux is booting up. Because it's booting off a usb stick, I have no way of posting what I see directly. And it goes way too quick.
Can you tell me how to indirectly get this information so I can post it? something like Dmsg (or whatever the cmd to view system logs) and write to usb?

It will probably not work without patching some files and recompiling.Steve
