I have a couple of questions on how to get pfsense installed on an alix board. I am considering purchasing a setup from netgate and I have a couple of questions.

      1. is there a tutorial on how to image the CF card (because i would be using an embedded pfsense version)? as well as a tutorial on how to get it set up?
      2. would I be able to restore my current configuration to the alix embedded setup?

      Thank you.

        1. Yes it's included in the main install doc: http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Installing_pfSense#Embedded

        2. Although you could restore your config and they are common across the install types, it's unlikely to work as your interfaces will be different. Unless you have an incredibly complex config it would probably be easier to re-enter you config manually. You can always refer to your backed up old config file.

It's not a complex setup, but i have a lot of static dhcp leases and vpn setup. i guess i could just copy and paste everything from the old box to the new.

          Thank you steve.

Well try it and see what happens.
If you only have WAN and LAN you will probably just have to re-assign the interfaces.
You can always start over if it doesn't work.

Alternatively you can try copy and pasting the static lease section of your old config into a new config file and then restoring that. Though they are separate sections for each interface so if you have many interfaces it could get complex!

It's not that big of a deal to move a config to an Alix, I do it all the time. It will prompt you to re-assign interfaces after you restore the config. As long as you have the correct number it should be fine.

good deal. I have ordered an alix 2d13 kit and should have it in a couple of days. will I need a null modem cable because of having to upgrade bios? or do you guys think that the newer board already come with the latest bios?

                THanks.

All the 2D13's should have the latest BIOS. It hasn't been updated in quite some time.

Netgate is an excellent place to get them. I just wish they would start carrying the new PC Engines enclosure. They have a nice custom one with side antenna mounts, but the new PCE one has front antenna mounts (it's wider), and you don't have to pull the board to swap the PC Card.
