Backing up for a new install/standard backup
-
if i make a handful of changes to my pfsense install, including installing specific packages, and i create a backup, does the backup create a snapshop of my entire pfsense configuration (packages installed and all settings)?
the only check box i see is for graphs.
thanks.

If you choose "All" in "Backup area" it means All ( firewall rules, aliases, cert, packages…..).
Even you can Backup the RRD Graphs. :D![Backup ALL.PNG](/public/imported_attachments/1/Backup ALL.PNG)

It backups XML config file only, not packages files.
Before restoring, you need to reinstall packages.

even if i click to backup packages i have to install them before i restore?
what if i have 10 packages installed, but i only re-install 5 and try to restore…what happens?
thanks.

Depending on package, you will get config file erros or missing file erros.
I think there is a script on pfsense That makes a full backup.
Try to find it searching forum or pfsense file system.EDIT:
The scripts for full backup are /etc/rc.create_full_backup and /etc/rc.restore_full_backup
