Dual pfsense, one working, one backup

is it possible to install pfsense on 2 PC-s and to link them so if one pfsense stops working,
other takes over? -

question more, i have freeradius working, i just install freeradius and copy configuration to my
backup pfsense.when will backup pfsense start to work? when mail pfsense is shut down or?

When carp believes master node is down.

Am i able to also do this but with 2 virtual machines (in different locations) rather than 2 physical PC's ?

Yes, you will need to create a bridge between both pfsense to simulate a local config scenario
carp checks and sync transfers a lot of packages between firewalls, make some tests to see if this setup will not fill up your link between pfsenses.
