Decrease # of interfaces - suggestions?

Hi folks,
I need to go from a 5 NIC platform down to a 4 NIC platform while maintaining my configuration. I did a test a few days ago that failed miserably. Steps:
1. Backup 5 NIC box
2. Boot 4 NIC box, run through interface config, create two VLANs on one of the NICs for a total of 3 real NICs, and two VLANs on one NIC.
3. Slap an IP address on the box, connect in to restore config, restore config.Once the box reboots after a restore, it comes up and asks me to choose interfaces to match what was assigned before, but it won't let me choose the VLAN interfaces - complains and says this isn't a valid interface.
Any suggestions on how to correct this? Would a find/replace in the XML config file backup for the interface names be an option?

I guess the 4 NIC box is reporting an interface mismatch and that has come about because you restored the config file from the 5 NIC box to the 4 NIC box and forgot to delete the now stale reference to the non existent NIC.
I suggest you assign an interface to pfSense WAN and LAN so you can get into the web GUI over the LAN interface, reconfigure and make sure you remove interfaces without corresponding hardware from the Interfaces -> (assign) page.

I actually am using all 5 interfaces in the 5 NIC box, and need to flip two of them into VLAN tagged interfaces on the 4 NIC box, so just deleting one wouldn't solve my problem…
I need to end up with 5 interfaces, two of them VLAN tagged, on the new box.

Probably the easiest is to change over to VLANs on existing hardware, remove any reference to the physical interface that will be removed, then back it up and restore it. That's assuming you're keeping the same type of NICs. If not, you can either reassign after restoring or manually change in the XML before restoring.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give that a try.
