SquidGuard old version install howto
-
Hello All,
pfSense-1.2.3-RELEASE
squid
squidGuard
Lightsquid
IPsec site to siteK-12 School setting
Hardware
3.0 gig dual processor
2 GB ram
IDE driveBackground:
This machine has run flawless for over 2 years now. Thank You pfSense devs!
Decided to upgrade the blacklists to the shallalist.
After updating the blacklist I could not get squidGuard-1.3_2 to see the new blacklist set?
After two days of wrangling I decide to uninstall squidGaurd and update to SG-1.4.3
After getting a successful install and starting SG service the machine went to mostly on and off 100% cpu and hardrive running constant ,,never stopping (with no users).Running top shows 6 squidGuard process eating an amount of CPU and lots of memory between the 6 running processes?
After reading a similar post I decide to uninstall squid, squidGuard, and Lightsquid. After uninstalling these three I done as suggested and from a shell done pkg_delete perl/* to get rid of all perl packages
Reinstall the three packages again,,and cpu,,,almost 100% and hard drive runs solid non-stop.
Of course getting into the webGUI things takes forever,,although webbrowsing was fast(with just me using the network), but I am sure this would go down with many users. How Do I:
Is it safe to do a manual install of say squidGuard-1.3.0 ?
I am not sure how the perl packages ties together with the older version number of SG?
I have searched here and found a few posts on this but the posts were somewhat dated.I know I should upgrade to pfSense-2.0.X but I am happy with the existing setup, and have to have this machine running Mon-Sat for about 1000 users,,So 'playing' is not an option.
Thank You,
Barry -

You can set it manually, using the correct version of the package for your version of freeBSD. But I still recommend you update system to install 2.x and install SG new.

dvserg,
Just wanted to report back,in regards to my finding for the day with my scenario. Even without suidGuard installed,,,after a reboot this AM,,and 5 hours later running top showed Perl-10.5 consuming 75% cpu? About two hours latert top and load dropped to almost no load. I decided to install squidGaurd same as I had done before.
One thing I am wondering,is after I got SG reinstalled,,I redownloaded the shallalist again. I honestly dont remember if I let the 'rebuild db" complete as it was taking so long when I previously downloaded the blacklist. This time I made sure this step completed.
Started squidGuard and is running now with almost no cpu load and no memory being eaten ( no users on it of course),Is it possible if the blacklist rebuild does not fully complete this could freak out squidGuard once started ? Just wondering
Thank You,
Barry -
Blacklist rebuild can take time from 10 min up to 1.5 hour (depends on the speed of you system)
Is it possible if the blacklist rebuild does not fully complete
Only if it had been interrupted manually or reboot.
