Need static IP help asap!
-
Hey guys!
so the company I work for needed to setup a remote server on the cheap I built a pfsense 2.0 box and got a static ip from a new (to us) isp.
the isp gave me the following information (ip addresses changed)
IP: 192.168.0.202
netmask: 255.255.255.255
gateway: 192.168.0.201i have not personally setup a static wan ip with pfsense but i figured it would be easy but i may have screwed it up because its not working and the isp says everything is working on their end
so i did the following:
in interface>wan
-I set the drop down to static
-set the ip to 192.168.0.202/32
-clicked on add a new gateway and set the gateway IP to 192.168.0.201
-then i went to gateways setups and removed the dynamic one
-i have 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 set as my dnsbut on the dashboard it says the gateway is down and I do not have internet
did I do something wrong? if posible i need to have it up and running by 8 tomorrow so i will be in the office again at 6 :(any help would be great!
thanks-jeff

Notice the netmask is 32 bits. pfSense DHCP doesn't work well with that size mask. You could (maybe) switch to PPPoE (if supported by your ISP) or change the netmask to 255.255.255.252 (or something else depending on how close together your WAN IP anddress and the gateway IP address are). With a netmask of 255.255.255.255 the gateway IP (192.168.0.201) is not on the same network as the pfSense WAN interface (192.168.0.202) so pfSense doesn't know how to get to the gateway.
If you override the netmask supplied by the ISP it is likely to be only a temporary measure (until DHCP lease expires).

did I do something wrong? As discussed above, you need a network mask of no more than 30 bits (unless the WAN link runs PPPoE).

Looks like neither, it's static.
I agree you need a netmask that includes the gateway address.

Looks like they gave you the wrong info about your static IP. That's an internal IP address, I think you may be looking for an external address.

thanks guys! i changed to 192.168.0.202/30 and that fixed the issue makes sense not sure why the isp gave me the wrong info but it works now
