Embedded and RAID1
-
Greets,
I've randomly considered using two identical CF cards with the embedded version, but didn't know if the same software RAID option existed in the installer as with the ISO image. I am yet to do an embedded install, so I haven't seen it. (I tried searching the forum, but I may not be using the right key terms. No specific answer, anyway.)
Does anyone know?
Thanks!

As far as I know for embedded there is no installation setup.
you just have to copy ( use tool dd ) the image to your CF card. So don't think it is possible to do RAID.But why don't you just copy pfsense on both CF cards. if one crashs, replace the one and put in the other.

Certainly there is no raid option if you use the NanoBSD images, as Nachtfalke says there is no install process at all. However if you install from CD (or memstick) and select the embedded kernel perhaps you can, I don't know.
What is the life expectancy of a CF card in read only mode? Longer than the other hardware in your box? PSU? CPU fan?
I would think that opening the box and replacing the card is exactly what you're trying to avoid.
If uptime and continuity of traffic (high availability) is that important then you should consider having two pfSense boxes in a CARP pair.

Good point. Sometimes I think of things in terms of technical challenges without considering all of the factors.
Thanks for the responses!

The embedded kernel option is there for running a full install on a device that can't take the normal kernel (like Alix boards). It is not for reducing writes to the CF card. Only the NanoBSD images have the setup with /tmp and /var in memory instead of on disk and the filesystem in read-only mode by default that is only temporarily changed to allow writes when necessary.
