Squid issues. (anything with a login)

for some reason my squid isnt working correctly.
any user who goes to a website with a login required just ends up timing out.
all regular websites pass through just fine though.thats basically the sum of it.
whats more interesting is the squid command isnt found. i've decided to reinstall squid thinking maybe some settings were incorrect.
it says package is installed however now i get[2.0.1-RELEASE][root@pfsense.localdomain]/etc(11): squid
squid: Command not found.can anyone help with diagnosing the issue?

squid[297]: Failed to verify one of the swap directories, Check cache.log for details. Run 'squid -z' to create swap directories if needed, or if running Squid for the first time.
so i ran squid -z
and it took some time….
i found that selecting 10000 and choosing aufs doesnt work for my esxi5 pfsense vm.
right now its on diskd and it seems to be quick. still scary to hit save cause it may simply stop again!
so the question is: when i hit save in the proxy server settings does it restart squid?
sometimes squid doesn't relaunch -

sometimes squid doesn't relaunchThe package creates a new config file and need to restart/reload daemon to apply changes.

i am fairly sure it does, you can confirm by tailing the cache.log file where you'll see the squid process starting/stoping when you save your changes via the gui.
(/var/squid/logs/cache.log)
