VMware 2.0.2 / pfSense 2.0.1 - PPPoE problem
-
Hi all,
having installed pfSense 2.0.1 as virtual machine in VMware 2.0.2 that lies on top of Windows 2008 Server 32-bit, I have dedicated one NIC for WAN access using PPPoE protocol. In Windows for that NIC all protocols but "VMware Bridge Protocol" are turned off, NIC is configured as "bridged" in VMware and assigned to the virtual machine. If I try to connect to my ISP using PPPoE, PPP tab in System logs shows recurring PPPoE connect timeouts. If WAN interface is put behind existing DLINK ADSL router and assigned static IP address and DLINK box as router, it works perfectly. There seems to be problem with PPPoE but I am not able to figure out what exactly. Any advices? Thanks.

How does pfSense get to the PPPoE server (ISP's PPPoE server?) in this configuration?

PfSense's WAN nic is connected to the ISP's router that works in bride mode. Prior to installing pfSense as VMware virtual machine, I have used simple DLINK router and it connects using PPPoE without any problems. I have also tried to install pfSense on an old computer and it connects using PPPoE. Problem only occurs when pfSense sits on top of the VMware.

not sure VMware Server plays nicely with passing through PPPoE, by your description it apparently doesn't. It does in ESX for sure. Probably a question better raised with VMware forum, maybe someone there has done that before, or maybe it's just not possible. It's widely done with ESX, I'm not aware of anyone doing it on Server but I see very few people running it.

One tip about PPPoE problems : try to disable ACPI on boot menu (option 2).
