Multiwan not switching automatically
-
I am using pfsense 2.0.1 and i have configured multiwan on it- Wan1 is cofigured as static and Wan2 is configured as PPPoe for failover.
1. created a gateway with wan1 - tier1 and wan2- tier2.
2. default is wan1. Note - if i do not configure any one of them as default internet will not work.now whenever wan1 fails it is expected to automatically switch on wan2 but it not switching between these two if any one fails can anyone tell me how to accomplish this.
Thanks !!

are you using squid? note that squid is not support multy wan.

The way how you configured your MultiWAN pfsense is exactly doing what you told it.
You have WAN1 and WAN2.
Setting both on same Tier (Tier 1) means that they do LoadBalancing. If WAN1 is down pfsense uses the last Gateway which is up and has the same Tier.If you setup WAN1 ans Tier1 and WAN2 as Tier2 then pfsense uses all Gateways with Tier1. If all Gateways with Tier1 are down it choses the next higher Tier.
In short: Set Tier1 for both Gateways.

Send me more details of your pfsense box.Yes i am using squid. I am not sure about this why the squid will not support multiwan.
can you please suggest in that case -

Set both Gateways on Tier1For squid and MultiWAN search the forum. You need some extra configuration with floating rules.
-
Squid always using systems default getway.
Set-up a “Floating” rule to catch them with following parameter. For Multi WAN Failover or Round robin.
Floating rules apply on multiple interfaces.
Choose your WAN 1 and WAN 2 interfaces, and direction “OUT”
Choose “HTTP” as destination port.
Specify the GETWAY with “MULTIWAN”

Failover WAN 1 to WAN 2 = Set WAN 1 on Tier1 & WAN2 Tier2
Roundrobin = Set Both on Tier 1 ( AlterNet TCP Request goes to both WAN) -

I do not want to use load balancing i need failover if wan1 goes down it should switch to wan2 automatically.
now i have to set wan1 or wan2 any one of them as a default gateway if i dont then the internet is not working and if wan1 goes down it is not switching the default gateway to wan2 - i have done the system>advanced>misc>default gateway switching but it is also not working for me…
