The last mention of the WNR3500L (v1) on this forum was in September, 2011, and the most relevant comment was in October 2009 by Mr Embedded:
"Its a shame they only put in 64MB RAM in this and the sketchy Broadcom CPU. It would have made a perfect pfsense play box."

Version 2 came out in January which I bought, WNR3500Lv2, which is open-source. It has 128MB Flash, 128MB RAM, 480MHz "MIPS 74K" processor, still based on Broadcom. It has USB 2.0 which can handle FAT32/NTFS hard drives, and can share files with just the stock firmware. Tomato and dd-wrt have been ported, including support for additional drive formats. These builds are still under 8MB, as is the stock firmware. The 128MB Flash and 128MB RAM are being wasted, at least to date.

Is this $65 product finally worth porting pfsense?

I checked this forum's documented minimum requirements, and it fits except that it is MIPS instead of x86. It can be flashed from a computer through Ethernet (may be necessary to flash a small firmware first) and can also be flashed by TTL.

Is this unit worthwhile for pfsense?

There is no support for anything except x86 (32 and 64bit) currently. Porting to MIPS would require a lot of work.
Go for it if you have the skills! :)

you can run dd-wrt? i think openwrt may be there now as well

I Had a Linksys WRT54GS v4 running DD-WRT all the info you need is here http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Switch

LAN card > 192.168.5.1/24
WAN card > Public IP from Virgin Media SuperHub Modem

But i have only config it using a wingate proxy server (Similar to pfsense) but it should work good with pfsense
