Hi,
You should try to write changes to hard drive. When you see on the console menu choose "99 write changes to harddisk" it will write changes to harddrive. And you will not need to do same changes again again after reboot.

ok now i feel like a real noob… i dont have an option 99 on my console menu...
- Logout (SSH only) 8) Shell
- Assign Interfaces 9) pfTop
- Set interface(s) IP address 10) Filter Logs
- Reset webConfigurator password 11) Restart webConfigurator
- Reset to factory defaults 12) pfSense Developer Shell
- Reboot system 13) Upgrade from console
- Halt system 14) Disable Secure Shell (sshd)
am i missing something?

Might be your hard drive write protect on bios or something else?

i see option 99 is for when you have booted with the livecd. i have it already installed and running on my HDD. i have made a few changes to config files like spamassassin's local.cf

On startup, pfSense regenerates all configuration files for applications installed through pfSense from a single configuration file maintained by the pfSense web GUI. Thus configuration flle changes made outside the web GUI are lost on startup.
Use the web GUI to tweak application configuration; don't edit application specific configuration files.
Edit: attempted clarification.
