Installing pfsense into usb stick or router??
-
hi ..im new with pfsense and for now im installed pfsense in my old computer successfully.
Created them as a hostpot server.i got ideal ..i do not know either its can be done with pfsense or not.
Can i install pfsense into router or usb stick and plug it into router?
so i need only router alone and make it act as a hotspot server ..
i did search thru the internet for any solution but cant find onesory for my bad english ..thanks in advance for ur reply :)

You can use the NANO version of pfsense for memstick installs. i don't think you can run it on a router. If you want a all in one, then get a Atheros based card and setup access point mode in pfSense.

thanks for ur respond
so there is no way to make a router as a hotspot gateway/server?any other solution tu make a router as a hotspot server?
hope anyone can show me the way or give me a hint for me to start -
What do you mean by "router"?
I think dd-wrt has hotspot capability: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Captive_PortalSteve

thanks for the info
dd-wrt require registration with Captive Portal provider.
its free but still somehow i depend on them. -
One of the alternative distros for domestic/SOHO routers probably does. Tomato or OpenWRT perhaps.
I guess it depends what router you have.
Alternatively you can put a wifi card in your pfSense box.Steve

thanks again ..
i will take a look at Tomato or OpenWRT ..
for now im using ubiquiti Nanostation M2 as signal transmitter.
connected to pfsense box and my hotspot work fine.im planing using Tp-link TL-MR3420 as a router(as hotspot server).
its smaller than my current pfsense box and easy to hang at any wall:)

That looks to be at least mostly supported by openwrt: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-mr3420
Though there are 3 versions of that model so check yours carefully.
You have a number of hotspot options: http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/wireless.hotspotSome of these require a separate authentication server but not all.
Doesn't ubiquity offer some solution for this?

i appreciate ur help ..from ur reply i got a clue what to experiment .
yup ..nanostation have a solution but the system will go thru captive portal provider.
im not expert with nanostation, mayb some advance configuration will solve my problem. -
You can install captive portal software directly in the M2: http://coova.org/node/3685 for example. However this does require rebuilding the firmware unless there is an image available somewhere. This still requires an external radius server but would be a two box solution. Trying to run authentication software in a low end router is always going to be tight, IMHO.
