CD/DVD boot failure – both pfsense and freebsd
-
I am rebuilding my firewall machine, and wanted to start using pfSense. However, when I attempt to boot any pfsense CD, I get the original menu of choices, but regardless of which option I select, the boot at first continues but then stalls (even overnight – I have left it on a couple of times).
I saw someone remark that were able to get FreeBSD installed, then prep the hard drive, then run pfsense okay. So, I have tried FreeBSD 9.0 and 7.4 CD/DVDs. In both of these cases, I also had the same problems.
The TEAC (but Samsung-branded) DVD drive is parallel. I have tried pairing it with a PATA hard drive, with a SATA hard drive, and even leaving both the PATA and the SATA drives connected. (These drives are ~100-200Gb.)
I have also tried IDE/AHCI toggles in the BIOS, to no avail.
Is pfSense and its brethren (m0n0wall, etc.) a total write-off for me? Or, is there some hope to get FreeBSD installing on my system?

It'd be great if I could get this working. It's my understanding that pf is quite powerful relative to iptables.</sis></sis></sis></sis></sis></sis></seagate>

It certainly looks like a problem with your CD-ROM drive (or it's pata connection).
You could try installing from USB memstick instead. Images for writing to a memstick are available on the mirrors.

Sorry…
i would like to ask some questions....can i just run/install the pfsense on new device for build up router or firewall ?
if install freebsd that will be include the pfsense right? the pfsense is customize of freebsd? -
pfSense is a customised version of FreeBSD. It is distributed as a complete OS.
Do not install FreeBSD, everything you need is on the pfSense CD (or memstick or Nano image).Steve
