WiMax USB Modem as WAN is it possible?
-
Hi,
I’ve just get a WiMax subscription and with it a USB modem, it’s a Modacom MW-U3500 (http://www.modacom.co.kr/en/product/en_02_3.htm).
I was wondering if it is possible to plug it to a pfSense box, and use it as WAN?
Have someone any experience with such? -
Check here :
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/8.1R/hardware.html
or you can Boot from CD and see if it works ( without install pfSense )

Appears that's only supported in Windows, no Linux or BSD driver that I can find, so that's not workable at this time.

It supports OSX. My Korean isn't the best. ::)
What does pfSense/FreeBSD show when you plug it it?Steve

In system Logs on VM with 2.0 RC2, I see this:
kernel: uhub_reattach_port: port 1 reset failed, error=USB_ERR_TIMEOUT
kernel: uhub_reattach_port: device problem (USB_ERR_TIMEOUT), disabling port 1on a hardware appliance with 1.2.3, this:
kernel: cd0: cd present [20110 x 2048 byte records]
kernel: cd0: 40.000MB/s transfers
kernel: cd0: <gct semi="" cd-rom="" 312e="">Removable CD-ROM SCSI-0 device
kernel: cd0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
kernel: umass0: <gct 0="" 2="" semiconductor,="" inc.="" m-wimax="" network="" adaptor,="" class="" 0,="" rev="" 2.00="" 0.02,="" addr="">on uhub1</gct></gct> -
Hmm, odd that it seems to work better under 1.2.3. Possibly a VM problem?
Like most of these USB modems it has two operating modes. The first mode, when you first plug it in, it appears as a USB cd-rom drive with the drivers on it. Under Windows you would then load the drivers and that triggers the hardware enter the second mode where it appears as a modem.
FreeBSD has some code to trigger the second mode automatically but only for devices it knows about. The method for doing this varies by device, for some it is as simple as ejecting the virtual cd-rom.
It may be that under 2.0 the device is set to the second mode where it then fails to load.
Try ejecting the cd-rom and see what happens. Unfortunately there is no eject command in pfSense so you'll need to copy it across from the appropiate version of FreeBSD. :(Steve
Edit: Looks like the eject method probably doesn't work for this hardware.
