NIC help for a newbie please

I'm using version 2.1 on a small form factor pentium based dell optiplex and it doesn't recognize the internal pci nor any of my usb nics, it see's the nics and lists them as bge0 and ue0 respectively, but doesn't let me assign ip addresses and doesn't see the links up when I plug them in…..big drag...I was hoping this would be a workable firewall solution

Please clarify. A driver seeing the NICs and taking control of them sounds like recognition to me!

What is your procedure for assigning IP addresses?
What is reported when you attempt such assignment?
How are you expecting "link up" to be reported?
