Noob assistance required setting up WG Firebox X500

Hi All,
I'm struggling to get my head around setting up pfsence on the WG Firebox X500.
I have burnt the embedded image to a CF card (512mb) and inserted it into the FB.
I boot up and get the option to choose 1 FreeBSD or 2 FreeBSD.
I select 1 and press enter.
When i get to the console menu i configure the lan/wan interfaces.
And this is where im stuck.
I am unable to access the web configurator when i enter the FB's lan IP address.
Also the display on the FB is on but blank and when i reboot, the cycle then begins again.
I also receive the following messages every so often:
Cannot dump. No dump device defined. Automatic reboot in 15 seconds - press a key on the console to abort Rebooting...Can someone please tell me what i am missing?

Does the system from which you are trying to access the web configurator have an IP address on the same subnet as the pfSense LAN interface?
What do you see when you attempt a traceroute (Unix) or tracert (Windows) to the pfSense box.

Which version of pfSense are you running?
The display should come on (with a backlight) and go through a boot up process. Then it displays 'Booting OS' permanently. Until you install the LCD driver.
Are seeing any messages about the interfaces coming up? Are you seeing link LEDs?
That memory dump message doesn't look good. :-\

I have enabled int 0 as wan and int 1 as LAN with dhcp enabled and the relevant LAN ip range setup. The device running hyper terminal has been assigned an ip of 192.168.1.1 via dhcp from the firebox and when I exe ipconfig / all I see the correct subnet.
Upon boot both interfaces are activated and assigned the status if up. However every time I reboot the console menu appears and there is only a back lit display with no text.
Have I been sold a faulty device?

I downloaded "pfSense-1.2.3-RELEASE-1g-nanobsd.img.gz" and burnt it to a CF card.
Every time I boot, the power light turns orange and the backlight comes on for a few seconds then the onboard buzzer sounds and the backlight turns off.
The console menu appears almost every time i boot, however the system sometimes goes into a loop due to the "cannot dump error".
I've purchased a brand new compact flash card to see if this makes any difference but it didn't.
I'm beginning to think i've been sold a dead horse…. :(

Sound like your box is working to some degree; unless you have another DHCP server on your LAN with the same IP address as your pfSense.

Which console menu? Its normal for the console menu to display something like:

I have no idea what the back lit display is supposed to show. (I don't have one of these boxes.)

No idea. What exactly are you expecting it to do that its not doing? How are you attempting to attempting to access the pfSense web GUI? (What are you typing into the browser location bar?)

That image is for a 1GB card and you're using a 512MB card. Try the 512mb image instead.

It should beep once that's OK. Does it show any text on the display?
I'm assuming you've read the firebox X-Core thread here? It getting a bit long now (28 pages!) but it's packed with useful info.Steve

When I boot without any media (CF/HD) connected the display shows a boot error message and menu options proving that the display does in fact work.
When I boot from the CF card the display turns on, iIget one beep and the display then turns off….
Once the boot is complete and I'm faced with the console menu (like in wallabybob's post) the display turns back on but nothing is displayed.
I'll try the 512mb img and see if that makes any difference.

Have you installed lcdproc or something else to handle that display?
I have not that kind of hardware, but if i have read it right. It will need "package" to handle the display -

Hmm, well that's odd.
The normal sequence for the LCD (if you haven't loaded the firebox LCD driver) is something like:Turn the box on: backlight comes on displays 'Watchguard Firebox' or something similar.
Shows 'memory testing' followed by 'complete'
Beeps and then shows 'Booting OS' (or boot error if the CF is wrong or missing)
The display then remains the same, with the backlight on, as pfSense does not talk to it without additional drivers.
