Full install on a flash drive

Greetings everyone.

Long story short.

I installed pfsense on an ssd, kingston to be exact. In 89 days, it died. Replaced it with a crutial m4. Began reading up on ssd's and decided to switch over to a small flash drive and did another full install. Only difference is I deleted the swap partition and selected the embedded kernel. Everything went fine and its up and running.I just want to make sure this will be ok with the flash drive.

Btw, I tryed a nanobsd version sized for my flash drive and in the pfsense dashboard, it showed the drive was 109% full with only 1 package, OpenVPN Client Export Utility installed. All logging and rrd graphs turned off. Didnt look right so I reinstalled the full version and its showing the drive 59% full.

512m sata flash drive.

Just dont want the intenet to go down again as the wife was not happy with me! ;)

If your Kingston drive was the 8GB S100 then they have some known problems. Check out the reviews here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139427
An SSD of decent quality should last many years with a full install.

If you are running from flash media you should use nanobsd. 109% full seems odd. Which image did you use?

I used the 512mb image. I also post on Hardforums and they also say its a faulty ssd. But i figured I would try one of these small flash ssd's.

The flash drive I'm using now is this.

Another reason for the smaller drive. A full install on the ssd showd 1% disk usage. The smaller one, 59%. I could use the ssd for another application.

Does the embedded kernel do the same as a nanobsd?

The embedded kernel install was intended for flash media before NanoBSD was introduced so effectively it should offer the same things in terms of not killing your flash drive.
The NanoBSD images are specifically designed for this though and offer other advantages. See:
