So I have installed PFSense gone through the setup guide,
at the end it tells you to take out the disk after shutdown
so I do and once it goes to boot it just sits there at

      F1 pfSense

      F6 PXE
      Boot: F1
      /boot.config: -d
      \

I have looked all over already most of the sites
don't answer what I need or the answer won't fix my issue,

      Thanks for any help

      Nathan

I don't know why I bother to post on forums,  I got it to boot,
I chose the Multi core Kernel option and it booted fine, I don't know why
though my system isn't dual core its single,

          Thanks anyway

I don't know why this happens,

I get an error message saying

            ral0: only 1 vap supported

            Not sure what it means

Hopefully because it may help some future user with a similar problem.

Which option did you select before multicore?

The error message means you are trying to create a virtual access point in addition to the normal one and the driver doesn't support it.

                Does it support hyperthreading?

It is either a statement  (for example, "Don't try to create more than one VAP because I support only one") or its is a warning that you have attempted to exceed the capabilities of the driver and device (for example, you have have attempted to create more than one VAP).

VAP = Virtual Access Point. Some WiFi devices can provide multiple WiFi access points on the one piece of hardware - hence Virtual Access Points.

Stephen: I chose the option in the middle, I believe it had something to do with no monitor,

WallabyBob: I got it when I make the Wireless Access point, I have reset everything now as I couldn't connect to it anymore, I'm not sure i'm doing any of this right, I believe it has HyperThreading,

Or could just be a warning and nothing to worry about!
                    Good point.  :)

If you chose the embedded kernel then after the kernel boots the console output switches to the serial port. The video console appears to hang.

Set your WAN to dhcp. Assign the ral0 interface as LAN. Set it as static and make sure you give it a different subnet to the rest of your network. In the wireless settings set it as an access point (hostap).
From there you should be good. You will have internet access from wifi clients.
If you need access to wifi clients from the wan side you will have to add firewall rules to allow it.
If you want wifi clients to be on the same submerged as the rest of your network you will need to setup pfSense as a bridge. That's a more complex subject!  ;)

I have set it up as followed and configured the wireless but when I press save, I get "ral0: only 1 vap supported" Do you have suggestions as to what I have to fill in so that I can get it to work ?
Also could it be the wireless card doesn't support running like that ? or does it matter what card I have, I only have one other card. One more thing after I hit save and got the error message I
can no-longer connect to the pfSense box

                          Thanks

                            I believe it has HyperThreading,

A single core CPU with hyperthreading can appear to the software as a multicore system.

Due to the problem you are having I would be inclined to assign your LAN interface to a wired interface so you can access the web GUI while you play with the wireless configuration. If you have only one wired interface assign ral0 to WAN.

Please post output of pfSense shell command```
                            ifconfig

I suspect you have inadvertently created additional AP. Did you create a wireless interface through _Interfaces_ -> _(assign)_ _Wireless_ tab?

I have 2 Network cards (1ob) and  a wireless card, Should I remove my Gigabit pci card and use the onboard for it, it also picks up something with firewire, and yes I did go to Interfaces -> (assign)

How are you accessing the webgui?
I seem to remember reading something about firewire connections being incorrectly claimed by some network driver. That can't help, disable firewire in the BIOS.
If you can give us the output of ifconfig that would help a lot.

I am accessing it through my Gigabit pci card, it sets it up I have
some assistance in it then it will spit out an I.P eg.192.168.1.129,
Go to a browser on a main pc then type that in and I
go through the setup process there,

As for the FireWire, I could not disable it as there is no feature to do so,
I have disabled other unnecessary things, I don't think they made a difference though,

And for the Output from the ifconfig, I would give it to you if I knew what it is,

                                  Thanks

Ah sorry. At the console menu select option 8, shell, and then enter ifconfig at the command line.
If you do that via an SSH session you can easily copy and paste the result. Alternatively you can run ifconfig via the Diagnostics: Command prompt: section in the webgui.

I forgot to say you need to enable SSH first. It's in the webgui under System: Advanced: enable secure shell.

I assume from your not mentioning it that having wireless clients on a separate subnet is not a problem for you.

Wallabybob: I didn't use any commands for it, I used WinSCP and just used the I.P and account info, the error was simply could not connect, I now know it couldn't connect because SSH is not enabled,

For the "ifconfig" It is more then could fit the screen there is a half cut off text at the top, I'm not sure if that is the top of the message but I think it's not, If I could get to what it used to say I would write it here, sorry

I attempt to connect to it by using a browser on my main pc, typing in the I.P and it will not connect it just tells me that "This webpage is not available."

I'm sorry if I am scarce on detail, I have only started learning about pfSense yesterday, The only other operation system that is based on FreeBSD that I know is FreeNAS and I barely know how to use it, so again i'm sorry if I don't include many details, I'm not sure what to include,

As for the 2nd option I managed to get the Ifconfig message using SSH and switching from WinSCP to PuTTY.

                                            For the "ifconfig grep ral"

                                            It simply tells me

ifconfig: interface grep does not exist

I am assuming that has something to do with the fact that the interface ral0, is not configured, so I
will configure it and give this, ( as soon as I configured it and saved changes I get, "ral0 only 1 vap supported")

I changed the command and this is what I got. ( used "ifconfig ral0" ) My new results are:

                                            ral0: flags=8843 <up,broadcast,running,simplex,multicast>metric 0 mtu 2290

I thought that it would be worth noting that my PuTTY instance has turned inactive, I was gonna retry it from the beginning to get the error, but it gave me another error, well a warning, " Warning: Invalid argument supplied for each() in /etc/inc/util.inc on line 646",

EDIT*By the time it all failed and I could not connect
anymore I was not able to get the error report sorry.*EDIT

I got past the warning by trying to setup the network connection, I'm not sure how it fixed it but the warning is gone,

                                            Now to setup the Wifi.

I am now gonna include all the settings I choose.

                                            Interfaces -> Assign,
add interface button, It makes a Lan interface with the Wifi card selected, So I save the changes,
I now move to the Wireless tab, add wireless interface button,

                                            Parent Interface : ral0 (00:12:17:9a:96:15)
                                            Mode : Access Point
                                            Description : Wifi

                                            Move to
                                            Interfaces -> Lan,
(I'm only going to write what I change or set)
                                            Enable Interface, Check,
                                            Description : Wifi
                                            Mode : access point
                                            SSID : Test
                                            WEP : Enable WEP, Check
: Key 1: EXAMPLE123 ( the TX Key box is automatically checked after I press save )
                                            Save.

After I hit save I lost connection, same as before. I hope I have provided you with enough information and detail, I really would like this box up and running the way it is supposed to,

                                            Now for stephen:

I set it up and the ifconfig message is up on the page, obviously. I will most likely be the only one on the Wireless, that's the point to this, A connection where no one is on, so hopefully I could gain a little more speed, So separate subnet in not a problem for me,

                                            Thanks to both of you,

                                            Nathan

I thought this tidbit of info may help. These are all the interfaces my system can see, I have now removed my Gigabit pci card, and I am gonna use the onboard.
