Squid install gone wrong?

i attempted to install the squid proxy package and something didnt seem to go right, the package never really finished installing, but appeared that it was installed. i couldnt find it under any menus (services, diagnostics, etc…) and i noticed a strange message at the bottom of the pfsense page when i refreshed the page.

i cant say if it was this exact message, but i remember seeing something like this at the bottom of the page

i tried to uninstall the package, no luck so i attempted a reboot of the box and saw this just above the numbered prompts when the pfsense box came online.

none of the LAN computers can hit the internet and i cant ping 192.168.1.1 or browse to it via my browser (the ip of the pfsense box).

i am online with an old router i have on the shelf as a backup.

from the pfsense box (before connecting internet to my backup router) i can ping 8.8.8.8 and a random PC on my network, but i cant do the same from a network PC.

1. does anyone know what went wrong with the squid install?
2. how come i can ping from the pfsense box (internet and LAN device)?

is the proxy somehow enabled and could that be what is causing my LAN PCs to not be able to connect to the internet?

You are on the latest version.

on the bright side…i have backups of my latest router config, which means option 4 (default the box) and uploading my latest config is a quick fix, but i want to know why the squid package didnt take (to avoid the same issue next time i try to install squid).

edit- i tried resetting to facotry defaults, that error still pops up, not sure how that is possible since it should be resetting to factory defaults....

If you do not have access to web gui, remove squidguard files from /usr/local/pkg and /usr/local/www and try a reboot.

Do you have access to pfsense gui? If so, try to uninstall squidguard from system->packages

So you need to learn how to remove files on a unix file system.

access pfsense console (menu 8)

use chdir to access /usr/local/pkg and /usr/local/www

use "rm -f " to remove files. Be careful to do not remove all your pfsense install.

honestly you are probably best off doing a fresh install and re-loading your config. I got my box into a state once where the filesystem got messed up and even a factory reset did not fix it. In that situation the best move is probably just to do a clean install from ISO, and then apply your config.

i actually ended up doing a fresh install before a reply was made. i had the .iso i used inside the case of the computer and pfsense installed in 10 minutes (maybe less, i stepped away after the prompts). i wanted to do a restore to see how well the backup config files worked and they worked well….worked as designed.

i was a little disappointed that i didn't uncheck the box to save rrd graph info, but that wasnt a huge deal.

however, i am still glad i got the info from marcelloc incase a package install doesnt go as planned, in the future.
