      I wanted something that could handle a few more watts than the  Intel NUC. The normal answer is a dq77kb but bought a Shuttle DS61.

      I'll have a cpu tonight and will post a dmesg, verify hardware tagging, LAGs and TCP Segmentation Offload on a pair of Realtek 8111E.

          That looks like a good base for a next step up from Atom!

          Please show more pics/specs when your able. I'm curious about power usage and network throughput.

            its 23 to 56 WattsUpMeters.com wall watts with a 55w TDP i3-3220.

            The fan goes from 1500rpm (silent) to 4250rpm (jet) with soft noticeable rpm at max TDP:

            and to test max cooling headroom at max RPM:

            no where near the heat of my iMac when I cover the vent with my hand:

              hello friend, I just registered to ask you something about the DS61 and I'm thinking of buying with an Intel Dual Core G2120 3.1GHz Socket 1155 Box performance should be very good.

              sorry for my English because I'm from Spain;)

              The IDLE temperature is only 28 ° with the default fan at 1500 rpm? know if you can download the rpm from the BIOS?

              Can you tell me if in IDLE recently the fan noise?

              I'll have to wait a bit because in Spain still can not find it ..

                The Bios has fixed RPM settings for "Ultra-Silent" "Silent" "Low" "Max". The second graph with 4C to 6C cooler lines was on "Max" 4250rpm (very loud) while the 28C, 1500rpm resting top graph was on the "Smart-Auto" fan setting. One can't hear the DS61 at 28C, but at max TDP on Smart-Auto, one can hear a slight hum. The fan ramps down extremely quickly once the load (4 thread π generator) was removed.

                even so, 70C is lower than my iMac at 77C.

                I have one of the units that was air shipped to the USA and payed under $200US, the first sea shipment of 260 was expected 1/3 so Newegg, Provantage, CDW should have stock after January 10th. There are another 400 units expected for the USA in Jan, Feb and March. I don't know the EU's shipping dates.

                            Nice system!

                            The H61 system has enough bandwidth for everything in that system and then some.  Good low-power, out-of-sight pfSense box that would be capable of running a few packages on top of it.

                              Hello to all,

                              incidentally I came across this very machine which seems to be a neat little thing for pfsensing.

                              But I have some issues: First of all I had to detach the card reader to prevent a stop while booting (error accessing storage device 9454). No big deal, it is not needed.
                              But then further during boot process (after loading scsi drivers, I guess) it stops reading from the attached usb disk drive saying something about read errors (and of cause the disk is ok).

                              Any hints?

                                You need to use the usb stick image to boot / install from usb. I had that too when I tried to put the live cd onto a usb stick and install from that.

                                  Yes, I came to the same conclusion, but the device stops booting.
                                  It says ' Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ufs/pfsense'
                                  then 'md0.uzip: 2962 x 65536 blocks'
                                  and stops there without any other message and does not react to any keyboard action.

                                  Any idea?

                                      use a usb image, and plug it into the front ports, not the blue usb 3.0 ports in the back.

                                      also note the

                                      might claim 40MB, but its attached via usb 2.0 and while I did boot from SD for fun, many of my

                                          I was also looking at the DS61 but found the E drivers most of the time aren't working but after seeing your post I decided to order it :)
                                          What pfsense version are you using on the ds61?

                                            I was running esxi and played with several pfsense guests, but now I'm running 2.0.2 non-nano amd64.  It seems silly to have LAG and vlans config on the switch, storage and vswitch config in esxi then of all the pfsense config. We are competing with a $75 home router anyway, so how much config fun does one want? :-)

                                            anyway, I have enough stuff on it now to not feel guilty.
