Hi folks,
I am new to this forum and this is my first post and first of all I'd like to say HI to everyone and second of all I want to dive in and ask my question.
I want to move to pfSense and I've been testing it out in virtualbox and I am really wanting to learn more and use it as well at home since my Cisco ASA has only base license and I do not want to upgrade, wanna learn something new.
I want to install it on something like "soekris" but these stuff are a little bit expensive and I don't want to spend that much money on it. Could anyone suggest something to me with 1GB interface? I don't want to install it on an old computer because I don't have place for that and my mom wouldn't let me do that either.. hehe
Anyway, thanks in advanced!

A new i3 notebook with gig ether can be had for under $400 usd.

I should have mentioned, I do not want to use a computer at all. Just something similar to Soekris.

Well, Soekris boxes, while they may not look especially like it, are a computer, just wrapped in a appliance looking box.

You need something small, or quiet, or? Hard to find any embedded appliances for cheap that have gigabit.

Help us to help you by giving more information about the intended application.
What is your budget?
Why do you want a Gbit interface on it? (You probably won't have gigabit to the home in the next few years.) What throughput do you seriously expect to use?
You can get an Alix which is capable of 85Mbps throughput, has 3 x 10/100 NICs, 256MB RAM and some expansion capability for under US$150 including box.

Well, anything over 100Mb is a perfectly valid reason to have a Gb port requirement. And, actually, I hope to have Gb to my home in less than a year, assuming plans go well: http://gigabitseattle.com/

You are very privileged. For monthly subscription to a 128kbps "broadband" service with a 1GByte traffic quota my friends in the Solomon Islands would have to pay about half a teacher's monthly salary (if the service is even available in their area).

Laptops on ebay….

Same seller I purchased a Like new out of the box HP EliteBook 8530p for $180 bucks. If I decide I need a additional computer running freeNas or VM's.... I'll purchase more and neatly stack-em up, one on top of the other. Laptops are powered up remotely, and shutdown remotely....no need to open.
Something like this would be the Bomb. But I'm a bit skeptical about Lenovo products as there quality has fallen over the years sense the IBM days. Will look into something on the upper end like this in the future once USFF size prices fall off a bit.

I do feel very fortunate to have this to look forward to, I just wanted to point out that the OP might be similarly privileged, and he may very well have Gb to the home sooner than a few years away. One person's situation is not everyone's, especially when it comes to broadband access. Plus, I wanted to point out that having anything over 100Mb makes the Gb interface requirement a necessity if you want to get the full capabilities of your connection, which is available in a lot of places right now.
