I would not, however, buy that system for pfSense. The 6 core Xeon will be vastly under-utilized as pfSense and most of its processes are single threaded, so usually it doesn't benefit from any more than 2 cores. You'll need to run the x64 version to utilize that much RAM. Spinning drives, especially of that size are generally only good for very large squid caches, otherwise I'd probably suggest a single SSD.
But, you also didn't tell us what you're doing with it. As a pure firewall, I think 1/3 of that machine would saturate its 1Gb ports anyway. VPN would probably do pretty well on it as well.
If you're simply asking: "will it work", yeah, it should. Will it do what you want to throw at it? Probably. Is it overkill? Quite likely.

Better to run pfSense virtualised on that box. At least you can then use the rest of it for something useful.Steve
