Power Consumption Spike w/ 2.0 + Hibrinate Mode?
-
OK I have a bunch of boxes running around NYC - some retail stores, some schools, some finance shops - a wide variety.
Each are running on virtually the same exact hardware - Dell Precision 490 Workstation with 2x Xeon x5060 3.2ghz dual-core CPU + 4GB ddr2 RAM + 2x 36GB WD Raptor HDD (gmirror).
Power consumption has spiked with 2.0 for some reason - same basic configurations and NICs, etc.
I've taken care of the on-peak noise issues by insulating some of the boxes, relocating them or swapping out the cooling fans.
Is there a save power option for off-peak hours?
For example: Retail setting with open WiFi - when POS terminals go idle/sleep (1hr timeout) pfSense box will also sleep?
School setting: Need wired up 24/7 for various projects but teachers have approved wifi devices… when they all leave can I change something so when no smartphones are on the wifi the pf box shuts down/sleeps until the morning?
Other/Manual: Can I program either the copper or the wireless (or both at different times) to shut down and/or go inactive but with quicker wakeup than power down?
I have two of these boxes side by side in my apartment and the 123 is quiet and much cooler... The 2.0 box (amd64, built 9/13/11) is hotter (temps) and louder (because of temps).
How can I manage this so during up-time its fine but attempt to have some down time on either copper or wireless interfaces.
Thx - sorry for long and possible confusing post.
These home test boxes are IDENTICAL... same production date motherboard exactly same BIOS, same month production HDD, same series CPU (serial numbers all within 1-2 weeks of eachother), isolates PSUs with good clean power, same RAM, etc. etc. Also they have identical add-in hardware and have ZERO PACKAGES running on these.
I can move these for ~$300/each on ebay so that's probably my budget for some smart guy to tell me to upgrade hardware.
Boxes are clean, well built, no issues, minimal configurations - just a basic setup with several subnets each on individual interfaces. Most are free-standing (no data-center type climate/HVAC control) inside offices so I don't want to kill these things afterhours.
Thx again.

Suggest you search for powerd - I think I've read some posts in the last few weeks that suggested running powerd can make a difference to power consumption on some systems.

just spent 2 hours searching through older posts - I'm not sure I follow with what powerd is and how to enable/disable it, etc.
Is there a tutorial somewhere?
thx.

Advanced\misc settings and just toggle it on. It made a huge difference on some of our platforms.
