Cannot access PFSense on ALIX
-
Hey,
I bought an ALIX 2D13 from Varia-Store with PFsense preinstalled. The first time it worked, but then, due to my lack of network knowledge, couldn't reach the PFSense (the server at all) anymore. I then bought a serial cable, installed drivers and tried to access it with terminal (I am using a mac), Zterm and minicom, but I couldn't access it. Is there anything else to do besides setting the correct usbport and 9600 8N1? The terminals then show nothing when I power on the ALIX.I have read here that the Board should start as follows:
When you power it on, the left-hand LED should come on steady for about 30 seconds while it is doing BIOS startup and then FreeBSD initial booting. Then the 3 LEDs should rotate through flashing for 30sec to 1min while the pfSense startup script is running. Then it will go back to the left-hand LED on steady. If that sequence is happening then it must be booting pfSense reasonably.
Mine doesn't, it just lights all three lights and then the left one in on permanentely? Good or Bad?
Thanks for your help!

[EDIT: When logging into the Router, I can still see that it has the IP 192.168.1.42, but I can neither PING nor open the Webinterface]

Which router? The Alix running pfSense?I can still see that it has the IP 192.168.1.42,
A router will normally have multiple IP addresses, one for each interface. Which interface has that IP address and what is the significance of "still" (you earlier configured the LAN interface to have that IP address?)
but I can neither PING nor open the Webinterface]
Please post the ping command you are using an the response. That will be much more nformative than "can't ping".
Similarly, what URL are you using to access the web interface and what does the browser report when you attempt that access?

Hey sorry for being not precise enough,
the router is a Zyxel, but I ran the Alix board on it, before I messed up the config. So I guess thats not the problem.
The Zyxel is configured as a router+modem, the alix is supposed to run behind it.
The Alix is running pfSense. When I connect the WAN bay (the one in the middle) of the Alix with the Zyxel, the Alix gets an IP adresse from the router, when I connect the LAN bay (the first from the power supply) it doesn't get an IP from the Zyxel.
Ping on Terminal displays:
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
(and so on)I tried to access the WI on https://ip-from-the-zyxel (and on http) and I get a "server not reachable".

Hey,
I could fix it! The first problem was that I bought a straight through cable and not a Nullmodem cable. As soon as I got access the ALIX I could fix it. So, I am back to square one and have to configure everything new. That might call for many many new posts.
Thanks and see you next time! ;)
