I have an older Netgear FA310TX Rev-D1 card that I'm trying to get running with pfSense.  While doing the initial setup I tried to put the WAN on that card, but pfSense didn't detect the link change and wouldn't accept it, so I had to use the other NIC (not that big of a deal).  After getting pfSense up and running I tried to configure it for LAN and I get a "dc0: Watchdog timeout" error on the screen and suddenly I can't connect to it via the WAN as it seemed to have knocked the WAN out.  So I had to restore to defaults and start over.  Should I write it off and get a shiny new Intel card?

Yes. I have tried that old netgear card in mine also and it really never worked or would work intermittently.
