External ip redirect to another external ip
-
hello community,
i have a question about redirecting from ip addresses:i must change a ip adresse on a server, but i know that a lot of peoples must wait 24-48 hours until the dns update is refresht on all servers.
so temporary, i have installed on the old ip pfsense.
now i want redirect the oldip to the new ip.
oldip is the wan ip address of pfsense
can you help me?
how i can do that?

best is to forward/NAT with old IP till requests are gone…
If that is not possible you could setup a small webserver (on pfsense directly?) which proxies the requests. -
hey,
thank you for your help! yes, with the webserver proxy thats perfect!
thank you!

get a DNS provider like Neustar /UltraDNS, or set your DNS records to as low as possible, for most that is 300 seconds = 5 mins.
and switch over.
the 24-48 hour time frames was what companies claimed years ago, which depended largely on your TTL settings of a domain name

and switch over.you won't transfer a big DNS zone for firewall switching only to another DNS registrar and afterwards back ;)

As you wrote above you need only to change your zone to a small TTL for the switching time… but perhaps his registrar didn't support it or even a small TTL is too much for his task...
And what you decide the best is is not always that your your/foreign ISPs find nice... Years ago and perhaps still actual they sometimes caches with their own TTL even you have short ones... so if someone needs "instant" switching you need a proxy (done so for several shops when moving them to bigger/better hosting locations).

very true, unfortunately, other providers will set what they fill suits them best, and often costs them less resources / money.
i will say thought, i have hasd pretty good luck myself, and i am located in Costa Rica, but we have a ISP linked direct into Miami.
