Would this work well with pfsense? I know it is pricey, just want to know if the hardware is all compatible?

      Thanks

I have a very similar Supermicro Atom though I don't think it's the exact same one it's close. The ones like that are very widely used.

what kind of performance can I expect with single ipsec vpn(road warrior) and mild traffic shaping(voip) plus possible squid/snort rules( very basic). Would I be able to.get around a 100/20 internet line?

Some numbers for a D510 (not much slower than the D525) are here: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,27780.0.html
You won't get 100Mbps of IPSec traffic. It should handle unencrypted traffic at 100Mbps easily though. Maximum throughput would be ~500Mbps.

Thanks for the link.  If I get this, it will replace my p3 1.4ghz. If I run a VPN off the router and just forward the ports to a server, what kind of performance can I expect with traffic shaping and filtering? ( this is a home setup, will most likely not have over a 50 meg connection and very basic filtering.)

              Thanks again

Well over 50Mbps.  ;) I don't know exactly I've never tried that combination of hardware and services.
You could run the VPN server on pfSense if you don't use it extensively. It's just that while you are attempting to push the maximum amount of VPN traffic it will impact other services. You could probably use traffic shaping to mitigate that.

Those supermicro 1U boxes work great. I'm not sure on the max throughput w/VPN or traffic shaping, mostly since the places I've seen them deployed have had only 10 Mbit/s or less of bandwidth so they don't get pushed very hard.

If you are planning to use Snort on this .. the throughput will drop dramatically. Atom is good for straight basic pfSense install with maybe a few services. Snort is a killer… even with more RAM it wont make much of a difference as Snort uses pure CPU than RAM.

Do you know if heat is an issue with these boxes in a home environment? I have tried researching it but seem to get some yes it is terrible and others say it is average. Couldn't a person wire in a couple 30 or 40mm fans to get airflow over the cpu/heatsink?

Get this motherboard and the case below.

You will have to get the ram and anything else you want. It might cost more but it will be a better than the pre-configured barebone system.
