Pfsense on Netgear ProSecure STM150?
-
Hi,
I have the possibility to buy a Netgear ProSecure STM150 pretty cheap. My questions is - do anyone know if you can install Pfsense on it?
From what i have dug up, it seems to be x86-based with a VIA C7 CPU and a SATA-harddrive.
The only hardware specs i can find is from Pcpro: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/security-appliances/249697/netgear-prosecure-stm150/specifications
Does anyone have knowledge of the hardware inside on any of the STM-models or any possibility to install Pfsense on it?

its hard to know without somebody having one to try.
if the Bios requires the Kernel to be signed you PROBABLY wont be able to load pfsense.
depending on how cheap it might be worth the risk to buy one and TRY it .

Yep, it's so cheap that i'll actually try and buy.
In other appliances i've tried there has been a switch in the BIOS for the kernel-check, but i don't know with this product. In other products, there have been a BIOS-password which needs to be hacked before you can use it. Hopefully this appliance won't give me that much trouble.

Just for the record, i bought the unit and tried to install Pfsense into it. I could not get it to work i'm afraid.
Other observations:
-
The VGA header does not work. There are only one array of pins on the motherboard that maybe could be used to get VGA output, but i did not suceed finding it. Very strange to put a VGA header on the motherboard with no function.

The STM150 would not boot any Pfsense versions or FreeBSD/FreeNAs either. Serial console did not work either, probably it was designed to work with the Netgear OS.

The unit did not boot the original OS. It has no way of telling what it's doing either. Most appliances have a integrated small speaker or a LCD. It could potentially be a DOA, but i have no clue if it works or not.

Disappointing.
The fact that it wouldn't boot the original OS indicates it may simply be bad hardware. Was there a reason it was so cheap?
Did it show any sign of life?Steve

I think the unit is on it's way to EOL, and Netgear has over-stock on the units.
The only sign of life i showed was that it started up, some lights were lit and the processor fan was spinning, nothing more. I could try a second example i guess but not right now.
