Hello, I'm a little confused about the companies behind pfSense.

On the main pfSense site, support page(http://www.pfsense.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=63&Itemid=69), it states that the company behind pfSense is BSD Perimeter, and provides links to the support portal site.  http://www.bsdperimeter.com/

But on the Support portal about page, https://portal.pfsense.org/index.php/about-us, it states that the support services are provided by Electric Sheep Fencing LLC. http://www.electricsheepfencing.com/

The address for both seems to be the same?  So is there a name change going on?  I must say that BSD Perimeter looks much better on a PO than Electric Sheep Fencing, ESF seems like an inside joke of a company name.

      Josh

Same people, just a name change that hasn't worked its way into everything yet.

Must have been a fun brainstorming session coming up with a name like that! Is there an interesting history to document about how the name was chosen and what were some of the other amusing options considered?

As the Greek philosopher Isosceles used to say, "There are 3 sides to every triangle."

Did Philip K. Dick's novel inspire you? ("Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?") ;D

There were many, but to name one, we considered "Shimata Dominguez Corporation", which is a (different) Blade Runner (director's cut) reference:

While Deckard waits for a seat at the noodlebar, the voice from the advertising blimp goes on longer than in the original version (to fill the void from the missing voice over) and adds the phrase "This announcement is brought to you by the Shimata-Dominguez Corporation – helping America into the New World."

                  And yes, we registered shimata-dominguez.com

and then, shortly after it was all done, we found this:  http://www.premier1supplies.com/detail.php?prod_id=17227

                    my brain exploded.

Ouch! Some naming issues there perhaps.  ::)

Shimata…  wonder which shi which ma and which ta?
I have no idea.  Might as well try to make one that sounds pretty.

Which gets me thinking...  Are there 1.3 billion people all not using PFsense?
Why do I get the impression China has zero usage?

Search on the forum, there are some users there. And we have customers with offices there that use it.

You probably just don't hear much since I imagine a great deal of that chatter stays inside the "great firewall".

                          Story for another thread, though.

Actually, China is sort of my EX-Expertise.
I can see where there might be some level of government interest in black-holing your pfsense sites there.
Cool - Different thread one day.
