So I saw in 2.1 codel is implemented. http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/2.1_New_Features_and_Changes#Traffic_Shaper
Is it it on by default, or does it need to be turned on?

It needs turned on in the traffic shaper. I'm not sure best practices. I just applied it to my WAN interfaces.

Hmm, it doesn't apply and save if I don't apply bandwidth settings.
Which is weird because codel doesn't require bandwidth settings to be known.

jigglywiggly probably the interface you are on is not reporting correctly the bandwidth.
Which error you see and what type of interface you have?

Normally it would be better to put you wan bandwidth there since that will make code better for your interface.
