Compact Flash - Undetected, unreadable after upgrade.

Hi All,
Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on getting my CF card working. (This model: Lexar 4GB)
Some history, the card is basically new. I had it running on pfSense 2.0.1 embedded w/VGA (4G) with an IDE to CF adapter (This one.) I had earlier unsuccessfully attempted to use the snapshot version, however I saw a post in the forum saying the issue with the vga version had been fixed, so I did an upgrade from the WebUI. There were several errors at the tail end of the screen that seemed to indicate the card was full, however it said it completed successfully, and there was a message that it would reboot in 10 seconds. 5 minutes later it still hadn't rebooted, so I shutdown the system. After that, the card is no longer recognized. I've taken it out and put it in my multi-card reader (the one I used to write the card in the first place) and the same, the card is not recognized in Windows/Linux/BSD.
Beyond just buying a new CF (it's actually difficult to find the smaller sized cards around here) is there anything else I could try?
Thanks,

If the card is not detected at all then it sounds like it's defective. If it's detected but shows no partition table then I'd probably do a couple full write tests, and assuming it passed, reinstall.

Depending on where you're at, it might actually even be a fake 4GB card:

It could easily simply stop working after its native size is breached.

I bought it in a factory package at Walmart, so it's possible! ;)

Hmm, yeah, it's not detected. I can see some messages from 'dmesg' in linux about some errors, but the card is never given a node by udev, so I can't seem to do anything with it. Probably the controller got fried. Unfortunately it was just doing an upgrade. And this would only be the 4th time it was written too. :P

I seem to remember reading something about CF cards getting stuck in IDE mode under certain circumstances. In this situation they cannot be read (or even seen) by a USB card reader but it was possible to recover them when connected via PATA.

I had a similar problem, my CF card was not being recognised by either my camera or computer, so I was unable to run any recovery software on the card, so obviously it was a hardware issue. After much searching I discovered http://recoverfab.com, and sent my card to them, and they managed to retrieve all 900 photos I had lost - excellent service and highly recommended.
