Nics only preforming at 500 mbps
-
A while ago I purchased http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856205007 and have been happily using it. Recently I upgraded to gigabit and noticed that the nics only preform at 500 mbps. Does anybody know why they might be limited, and what I can do to fix it?

CPU…

Oh great that isn't really easy to replace. Is there any nettops that have dual nics that would be able to do a full gigabit or an I looking at a full sized rig.
-
I take it you mean actual throughput? From the WAN through the LAN?

I'm using the same box and it seems to be running at a full gig, according to ifconfig and the switch it's plugged into on the lan side. I haven't tried measuring the actual transfer rate though.

Presumably he's talking about actual throughput; in terms of reported link speed, it's always going to be either 10, 100 or 1000 with these cards.

If you want actual 1Gbps throughput, between any two firewalled interfaces, you need to step up to a more powerful CPU. A G1610T perhaps. You won't see more than ~700Mbps with that Atom.

While ifconfig detects full gig when you try to actually utilize it you will be capped around 500 mbps. I thoroughly tested this using various methods, and you can see for yourself that it isn't full gig by transferring a large file between some internal computer and the firewall. (Or if you have gig internet then just run a speed test)

Actually the atom processor is capped at ~450 mbps. I ended up just building a new firewall with a AMD A6-6400K black. I considered the celeron, but decided to go with an AMD because it's cheaper, and I couldn't find anything that looked like it could actually drive full gig in a mini box.
**EDIT: the new cpu coupled with an intel nic and a realtek nic yields speed tests of 920mbps down and 875 mbps up good enough for me :)

Thats good enough for pretty much anybody ;)
I like AMD - Seems to work well in this application.

I'm actually quite surprised you couldn't get more than 450Mbps. I would have expected at least 500 with Broadcom NICs. With Intel NICs and some tuning you should see over 600Mbps with a 1.8GHz atom.
