Asus VivoPC VM40B : best hardware platform ?
-
Hi, I believe this is the best hardware Platform available now https://www.asus.com/ASUS_VivoPC/VivoPC_VM40B#overview Just buy a cheap gigabit 8 ports switch. Any advice ?

1007U, crippled 1.5GHz IVB celeron, enough for most but don't dream of snorting/vpning gigabit.
No IPMI or other kind of remote admin interface.
Worst of all…. SINGLE LAN port. Since pfsense doesn't support USB3, you'd get to use fun USB2 nics. Not to sound rude, but did you actually look at the specs?

Hey, Thank you for your reply. The cost is only 229 euros…
- What do you mean by "crippled"? (the cpu was launched Q1'13)
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Celeron+1007U+%40+1.50GHz not so bad…
http://ark.intel.com/products/72061/intel-celeron-processor-1007u-2m-cache-1_50-ghz - Why do you need Intelligent Platform Management Interface?… I would only use it at home, in this case, do I need IPMI??... I was thinking of connecting a vga cable to my monitor as it is already hdmi connected to my computer...
- What's the problem with the gigabit single lan?!? Just buy an additional cheap gigabit 8 ports switch..
- Why do you believe that IDS is impossible on this hardware? Can you elaborate?
- Which other cheap hardware would you recommend?

Sorry for bump.
1Gbps speed is totally useless if your Internet is 100Mbps max.
Btw, GA-C1007UN-D is a much better option. Don't trust Asus, their stuff never last.

"Best" hardware platform is totally subjective. That would never work for me with pfSense. Where's the rackmount ears? ;)
With only one NIC in it, get a managed switch and create two VLANs on it. One for your WAN connection and one for your LAN connection.
