Comments on Sourcefire / Cisco purchase
-
Any thoughts on the continued support of the snort package given that Cisco purchased sourcefire? I want to roll out the snort package to some of my customers, but am hesitant to have them sign off on the install if cisco decides to snort giving it out. Any thoughts from the developer who makes snort work with pfsense? If they discontinue it, any thoughts on suricata or a similar for a replacement? Thanks.

The public position is here: http://www.cisco.com/web/about/ac49/ac0/ac1/ac259/sourcefire.html#~faqs
Q: Does Cisco plan to maintain Sourcefire's open source products, such as Snort, ClamAV and Razorback?
A: Cisco is committed to continued open source innovation to help to protect communities and organizations. Sourcefire's experience in open source will help inform other open source efforts at Cisco, such as Open Daylight, which is an open source controller platform supporting Software-Defined Networking (SDN).Q: What are the plans for Cisco integrated IPS on ASA?
A: The ASA is an industry leading firewall and Cisco intends to continue to aggressively invest and evolve the ASA. Specifically, Cisco intends to utilize the Snort engine and signature set as part of the ASA integrated IPS offers. This is in-line with the architectural evolution that was already planned as part of the Cisco platform evolution and is consistent with Cisco's commitment to growing the Snort open source community and Snort usage across the industry.–-
Nothing is forever, but it looks positive for now.

Yep - And last year ORB said they would be releasing new and updated software and continuing support for my products and this year, after being bought out, they summarily dumped the entire product line and most support and shut down the servers.
I think I'll take a wait and see attitude.

I trust Cisco about as far as I could toss a rack's worth of cisco gear.
They may claim to be committed, until they decide it doesn't generate enough revenue/profit for them.

Correct - Companies like that will even go so far as to buy something that competes with their product and scrap it as fast as they can.

That's kind of what I thought. I'm just trying to figure out if I want to offer snort to customers. It might be a losing proposition long term.
