LAN traffic and WAN traffic dont match
-
I'm looking at graffic graphs in the dashboard
I have 8mbit/970kbit adsl. I have setup traffic shaping successfully. Im using pfsense 2.0.3. I have 1 lan and 1 wan. Pfsense takes internet ip directly, my modem is in bridge mode. I dont have any antivirus or cache proxy set upBy looking at traffic graphs WAN out and LAN in gives the same graphics, i can understand they are the upload graphs.
Eventually, WAN in and LAN out is the same and they are for downloadProblem is this, i limited upload in the traffic shaper to 500 kbit. Eventually i see LAN in chart fluctuates around 500-580 kbit.
But WAN out chart revolves around 950-1020kbit. I can understand they should be the same charts but somehow WAN out is getting larger with some overhead?. It can somehow affect traffic shaping performance if WAN out goes above 1100kbit. Thats why i set my upload limit so low in the traffic shaping configurationWhat is wrong , am i missing something.
There is no problem with download because it is never saturated but upload is always saturated. -
If you want to limit the wan out, add a traffic shaper, limiter tab, limiter rule, then create a wan rule which allows the traffic out and add the limiter to the in/out in the advance settings for the wan allow rule.

I have already a traffic shaper. And i limited WAN section to 500kbit. I think thats the way to tell traffic shaper my upload limit.
Do you want me to also set a "Limiter" rule also? Doesn't traffic shaper handle these limits?
I see that my traffic shaper rules is in the "By interface" tab. There is also a "Limiter" tab. I play and create new limiter rules but does it solve my problem, is this the problem?By further reading your comment i understood your comment. You wanted me to create a firewall rule which allows all WAN out traffic out. And then, in the advanced setting of that rule you want me to limit its bandwidth by the rules of "Limiter rules". It can work but why regular traffic shaper couldn't handle this?

I have the same issue here. Lan Traffic is limited to 1mbps , and when in full throttle the lan graph show 1mpbs in accordance to that , but at the same time the wan graph show around 2 mbps going through . I guess could be an issue with the wan graph because it never reaches 2mbps in any interface! :'(

I figured it out. This happens when using VLAN interface as LAN , weird though .

My problem isn't solved . I'm putting a screenshot of my dashboard. You can see download graphs seems in correlation. But upload graphs are not. Wan and LAN uploads have a ratio of 1.8 to 2.0. It seems LAN to WAN, data is almost doubled. I have no idea why it is happening

I solved my own problem. I'm telling what i did and what i use for a reference for other people.
I had an ADSL connection with 830 kbit upload limit and 8 Mbit download limit (i tested with speedtest.net). I had to set traffic shapers upload limit to 450-500 kbit to prevent high packet loss. Besides of that from LAN to WAN upload bandwidth was almost getting doubled. Setting upload limit to 500 kbit was reducing my upload capability. It should be around 800-850 kbit.
Solution:
I had set pfsense's BOTH lan and wan's MTU to 1454 and MSS to 1414. I also set my Nas4Free (which is on 24/7) rig's and my main computer's MTU to same values.
These steps solved the problem, i raised my upload limit to 800 kbit, packet loss is between 0% and 4% under heavy upload and download. According to my research these values are normal.Still problem:
From LAN to WAN upload graph is still getting doubled, for example under heavy upload i see a graph revolves around 800-900 kbit under LAN, and 1.40-1.60 Mbit graph under WAN. It doesn't affect the internet or network though but it still remains a mystery to me
