[pfSense 2.1] Slow GUI
-
I was running pfSense 2.0.2 on a PC Engines Alix board. It was nice and slick. I got notified, via the dashboard widget, of 2.1 being available so eventually chose to allow auto-update. That worked OK but seemed slow…
Data is, as far as I can tell, not affected. The load average when it's left to its own business is 0.07, 0.04, etc but the webGUI is s l o o o o w. I thought maybe that particular box wasn't what I thought it was.
Yesterday I did the same upgrade with a different box (same hardware). Exactly the same effect: what was once a slick interface turns to treacle when it's running 2.1. It was so bad, actually, that I downgraded to 2.0.2 (but selecting the alternate boot thing) and it was back to the previous slickness.
Is this a known problem with 2.1? I really like some of the new features (OK, pretty much all of them) but it's such a drag waiting for pages to change that I just can't face running it.

Sure not having a dns related problem? My webgui on 2.1 pops.. And its running on a vm.

FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p11So cleared cache - here is example of load of firewall rules page.. Do you issues switching between specific pages, the overall system status page will take a bit longer than other pages – especially if you have lots of widgets on it, etc.
Maybe use a tool like firebug to see if having issue with specific parts of the page?
Are you https or http - does it make a difference?

It's not a cache issue: I have one router as 2.0.2 (which is the one a recently upgraded to 2.1 and then downgraded again), and one on 2.1 (which has been on 2.1 for quite some time. Months).
An example of differing speeds is from the dashboard page to the RRD graphs. The 2.0.2 version takes about 1 sec to switch page, another to load the first graph (CPU) and the whole thing is complete within 7 seconds.
On the 2.1 router it take >3 seconds to switch to the RRD page, another 3 seconds to put up the first graph, and about 20 seconds to complete the page. That's after having a trial run, so if anything the cache should be helping that along!

I would suggest that yours is not a suitable system for comparison. A VM will be running on a very fast CPU and be orders of magnitude faster than a hardware router like the Alix. An inherently slow bit of code will still look super-fast on your system but would crawl on mine.

I installed Firebug and have absolutely no idea what to do with it (I am not a HTML guru - less than a n00b, actually) but attached example screenies.
The first is 2.0.2 and shows the initial data taking 144ms. The same for 2.1, the second screeny, takes 1.31s. That difference is typical of it all.

"A VM will be running on a very fast CPU and be orders of magnitude faster than a hardware router like the Alix"
Very fast cpu? No not really "AMD Turion II Neo N40L 1.5GHz 2-Core " But I will give you it prob got a bit more umph then your alix board.
So maybe you missed the question, are you running https or http? I would look to see if you performance is better with just http.

So maybe you missed the question
Sorry, that was an unintentional lapse. It is HTTP on both.
-
Sorry I don't have a board to test with.. It works fast and fine here… Even though I am not running it on any kind of rocket ship type cpu, I agree its a prob got loads more umph than your alix board.
What specific board you have - maybe we can get some other owners to chime in on their experience.

They are both Alix 2D3: LX800, 256MB, 3 LAN.

Did the upgrade go smoothly? 256MB really is the low limit. A number of other users had upgrade issues going to 2.1 from Nano including myself (on a 512MB box).
Some people found a better result by installing 2.1 fresh and then restoring the config.

The upgrade itself went OK but there have been a few issues since: the traffic graph sometimes doesn't show the network devices sending data, and the traffic RRD graph is showing NANs.
I'll try a fresh install of 2.1 and see if that changes things.

Fresh install, reload config…. the screeny shows no significant difference when switching from dashboard to RRD (just after going from RRD to dashboard).
