You shouldn't have to do that.
Please give more details about your modem/router and pfSense box.

I have a speedtouch 780WL setup to do pppoa to pptp relay and Have pptp setup as the wan connection on PFsense, with the address of the speedtouch as the remote server. All works fine when  connected.

        Speedtouch setup using commands here:

Ah, pptp is perhaps more unusual. Can the 536 be setup as a PPPoE-PPPoA relay/bridge?

No I believe this is the only way around my isp providing ppoa only. I did have a vigor 120 which did ppoa to ppoe but the performance was poor compared to the speedtouch.

Hmm, interesting. I use a V120 with great results, no issues at all here in the UK.
              What speed are you seeing?

12 to 13 on a 16mb line on both but the speed on the vigor was up an down on my line and the whole thing just seemed sluggish.

If you still have the V120 I would give it another go. It will at least confirm if your problem exists on a PPPoE connection. I went through several firmware variations on mine before settling on one that gave best results. Draytek released a number of firmwares supposedly tuned for different line conditions, it's hard to find much info though.
                  ftp://ftp.draytek.com/Vigor120/Firmware/V3.2.4.4/

Edit: Just seen in another thread that you have the V2 so that's the wrong link. The FTP site is supposed to be 'international' so I'm not sure what differences it might have to the UK website downloads. I'm using firmware from there though. Newer firmware for the V2 though:

Thanks for the info, I had tried each firmware and have actually sold the device now.

OK, back to the original question then!
When the connection drops does pfSense still see the PPPTP tunnel as up?
What is the monitor IP set to?

I think the problem may have been a dying speedtouch as the connection began dropping several times a day, swapped with another in same config and so far so good.
