PFSense 2 Book Release Date
-
If you had to buy and read the cookbook, you've already been punished enough. (kidding… maybe. :-)
Haha you're not joking. I had a chance to flip through it… And you might as well just click through the menus on an installation of PFSense... That's my opinion obviously but read the reviews on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/pfSense-2-Cookbook-ebook/dp/B0055Y79EG/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1374864522&sr=1-2&keywords=pfsense
No comment. :-X
But thank you much for your response. I'm really looking forward to the new book & am really glad I'm back in charge of an IT shop & get to implement it again. I am anxiously awaiting the day I can drop these crappy Zywall USG 100 Firewalls off the top of the building. Besides completely missing actual port forwarding (they only have virtual servers & it works terrible) they're insanely buggy. The slave somehow takes over the VIP sometimes daily & the network traffic goes to hell. Have to login & reboot it. I remember PFSense 2 having that issue but that was while it was in Alpha & it only happened if the line actually failed. This one tries to assume master even when there's been no issues.
That sounds … fun.
So, is there anyway to purchase the unfinished book without having to pay $600 for a support subscription? I'm not 100% sure I would want to do that but depending on how soon they approve the money for the hardware I may be quite interested in that option. It appears there may be a torrent of it out there (there are tons for the cookbook) but I would never pirate something from an Open Source project like this. If I end up needing it before official release I would be OK with paying regular price for the unfinished book & buy it again when finished. I'm not 100% sure I could get them interested in purchasing support. I'm going to try & move PFSense into our production and that would be the only way I could justify a support contract of any sort.
There isn't a way to get a copy of the book yet aside from as a support customer. It's not that we wouldn't like to do that, but as far as I'm aware we can't legally do that the way things are setup, since there are others involved (publisher, etc, etc)
We try to spot torrents and sites that host the book and send them takedown notices (the DMCA is good for something … sometimes ... but not much use outside of the US) but it doesn't always happen. The torrent I saw just now was the old book.
It will be coming out very soon in the next couple months, so the wait won't be too much longer. We just don't have specific dates yet, but it would be well before the end of the year at the very latest.

Yes… That's what you get though when you become VP of IT for a company that's never had any IT personnel and things get cobbled together by a web developer with a physics degree.
But I eagerly await the release of the book, I'm sure it's going to be even better than the first which was amazing. I'll keep trying to spread the gospel of PFSense.

i just got gold member, and have access to the draft (will we have access to the full blown electronic copy ?) but for sure I will buy the hard copy. Do you guys plan to put it at pre-order on amazon sooner than the release ?

Yes, it will be on Amazon once we get all of the publishing details worked out.
-
I think, but I don't know for certain, that we will have a way to purchase an electronic copy directly from us rather than through Amazon or similar.
What's the status with this?
-
Cant wait for the book!!!
-
I am also anticipating this book. In july it was 95 - 99% complete. Is it any closer?
-
does this book cover 2.1 version and ipv6 features?
-
Yes.
-
Great work!
-
Hurry up and take my money for the book please :)
-
Hurry up!

I ordered the first book. I plan on getting the new one as well. Anymore news on the progress and release date and is there some other books you would also recommend. Covering 2.x ?
-
No date for release yet.
There aren't any other books for 2.x that we can recommend.
-
It will be great if you add chapters about some popular packages (like squid) in new edition.
-
That's what I thought. All the other books I found had terrible reviews. That's why I purchased the first book. Thanks for your response and I'm waiting in anticipation for the release announcement. Hopefully it won't be to much longer

Hello,
It's worth it to buy the new gold subscription!

-
Hi,
Any update on when the book might be available to the public?
Cheers,
Victor -
No promised date for release = vaporware!
-
I like the first book. I found it helpful in setting up pfsense .
as with others I'm looking for updated information on the release of the new version of your book.
How is it coming and is there any light at the end of the tunnel yet. -
I got the gold membership (access to the books and monthly hangout plus config backup) I would recommend it to anyone
-
The draft copy of this book is available to be downloaded from the public! I found through my google search!
-
Hello,
I hope that's not the unpublished pre-copy found only on the gold support site!

-
ASGH,
Can you give me a URL to download? -
Really? You're asking about that on the pfSense forum! ???
Have you any idea the effort that Chris and Jim put into the book?

Seriously guys, this is an Open Source project with a group of dedicated and professional guys in ESF coordinating and nowadays doing the vast bulk of development. They deserve to be able to eat and pay the mortgage. Pay your $US99, get the subscription, get the PDF of the book, get auto config backup, get the monthly "hangout".

PM me the search terms you used and the URL that had it and we can get it taken down if it's really there. I didn't see anything in the first couple of pages that was the 2.1 draft version.

Done, I've sent you the link & searching term.
-
Thanks, I passed it on and we'll try to get it taken down.

Edit: replied to a now deleted post.
Ah, well that is a problem. Something I'd not considered in fact. :-\

Or,… how about just offer the book, without subscription, auto config backup, monthly "hangout", at reasonable price? They don't have to do it, of course - it's their product and business model, after all, however, at least be open with us - tell us if and (if so) approximately when.
-
Once it be ready/finished, they will be selling the book, same way the previous book
For now, they offer the "draft version" to the "gold subscription" customers as a "gift"
-
I was very close to buying both pfSense: The Definitive Guide and pfSense 2 CookBook but now when I read how outdated they are, I skip it and wait for the new book to be released. I would prefer to have the physical book and not a PDF so I'll just wait.

@ptt:

For now, they offer the "draft version" to the "gold subscription" customers as a "gift"Documentation describes functionality and behavior - without it, no-one except the authors know what to expect. Undocumented, pfSense is just a complex toy.
-
Documentation should follow the release….its like that everywhere else.
Things change so quickly that the book will be outdated the time its released!
-
I have an idea for the team. Right now we have two choices:
1) Gold Subscription, which includes the book online.
2) Buy the physical copy of the book as they are released. Can there be a third option:
3) "Book Subscription" for, say, $10 per year, that only includes an online version of the latest documentation but without the Gold Subscription support features?
I'm kind of undecided at this point. I plan on ordering the 2.1 book when it comes out, but the 2.1.1 and 2.2 releases will be out and like the idea of online, fresh content.
-
Good idea! But I would suggest to make it broader… there are plenty of "home" users (like me), and to be honest $100 for a gold subscription is not what I want to spend as a yearly recurring cost. Lower that enough (not talking about going down to $10), and I think much more people (including me) will sign up for a yearly subscription, even if the only advantage is funding the project & getting the latest software + documentation? (call it silver, book, basic, ... you name it)
It will create revenue, it's the economy of numbers... 8) -

(That's why, technical) paper books don't make sense in 2014.
