Issues after 2.1 upgrade
-
I am noticing few issues after upgrade to 2.1 recently:
- The GUI that was very fast with the previous version is much slower after the upgrade.
- I am unable to display Packages list. The error "Unable to communicate with www.pfsense.com. Please verify DNS and interface configuration, and that pfSense has functional Internet connectivity" is displayed. I tried few things suggested in the forums but nothing helped. I can do DNS lookup form the box into www.pfsense.com
- I always had maximum subscribed Internet speed when tested. Now it tests about 30% less than before.
- There was a notification after the upgrade that system has captured a bug, which I submitted. I am pretty sure its somehow related to these issues I am having.
Any input on how to fix this is appreciated.

What hardware are you running this on?
What things have you tried?
What is your expected 'internet speed'?
What was the bug?Steve

Thanks for the response. The hardware is Dell 755, core 2 duo, 3 Intel gigabit NICs with 2GB of RAM. It's home use. It performed great for last few years.
I have 30 Mbps TWC, always around that number when speed tested. After upgrade I am in neighborhood of 20.Can't remember what the bug was. It was large script I submitted and don't see it anymore.
Rebooted several times, I tried to increase MBUF but that didn't do much. The system usage is relatively low (state table 0%, MBUF 11%, CPU 1%, Memory 10%, SWAP 0%, disk usage 3%). Still GUI is not very responsive.I forgot to mention that after upgrade Squid is not starting after reboot. I can't reinstall as Packages section is not available anymore.
PfSense is great by the way. Kudos to all that run and support this project.

There were two big changes going to 2.1. The code base was switched to FreeBSD 8.3 so that means updated drivers etc. You're using Intel NICs so I doubt that's a problem. IPv6 was enabled in many areas of pfSense. Does TWC support any IPv6? The worst case is where your ISP or upstream router supports some IPv6 features but not enough or it's IPv6 support is broken but not enough people are using it for them to care.
I would expect your system logs to be filled with IPv6 stuff if that was the case.
Squid not starting is a clue. Is pfSense stuck in a loop trying to reinstall packages? Again the system logs should tell you that.In general the webgui should not be noticeably slower especially on a machine of that spec. Are you running any other packages? Any traffic shaping?

Thanks for response Steve. No traffic shaping, running Squid and Light Squid only. It looks all the issues were Squid related. I found bunch of errors in log, where system was continuously trying to start squid service. I removed Squid which resolved all other issues I mentioned. The Packages are available now and GUI is responsive again.
I tried to reinstalling Squid packages multiple times but cannot get Squid service to start. I will do some research around Squid, now that I know what the main issue is.Thanks again,
