So just want to say that this is my first post and have done some searching on this. Haven't found any topic on this and thought I would ask.

I work for an IT company and we have an Ecycling department. I see a lot of equipment come and go through the department but this item caught my eye.

Its a Barracuda NC500 Web Application Firewall. Looks pretty BA if you ask me. Opened it up (Voiding any warranty if it had one) and it seems to have a normal mini ATX board with a riser adapter to a Dual Gig NIC. 2GB DDR2 RAM installed and a 250GB HDD.

Was wondering if there might be any special installation instructions I might need to install PFsense on this pretty little hardware. I was thinking maybe formatting the HDD and then installing via USB would work but would like some opinions.

If needed I can attach some pictures of the unit. Its in working condition and was able to get into BIOS but it hangs when trying to load into the Linux Distro that is loaded on the HDD.

Let me know your thoughts and thank you ahead of time.

If it's all standard x86 hardware then you should be able to do it.
What NICs it has is important performance wise.
Does it have VGA out? Then boot a usb memory stick with the memstick image.
If it only has serial console then you are more restricted. JimP made a memstick image with serial console so you could use that. Otherwise remove the HD, connect it to  a machine that has vga/keyboard and install. Then boot and "select enable serial console" in the webgui. Move the HD back and reconfigure the NICs.

I think everything Barracuda sells runs Linux so I bet the hardware will work just fine.  My Barracuda spam filter at work is just a Linux VM we got from them; saved us money running it as a VM instead of buying their hardware to run the same system.

If it is like the Sendio ICE Box I tore apart, it's probably a SuperMicro board inside and a SuperMicro case, the Barracuda's we've been installing lately look like SM cases rebranded to Barracuda.  You will probably have to reset the BIOS to play with the settings as the Sendio box I turned into a router had a password on the BIOS.

Every Barracuda we setup has PS/2 and VGA ports on them as you can interface into a console to at least setup IP address.

Depends on the model and version, some are more "white box" than others, even in the same model.  The model describes the features, not specifically the hardware inside, that'll depend on the general manufacture date.  Keep in mind, a particular Barracuda model may have been around for 5+ years, the 5 year old version is going to have different internal hardware than a recently built version.  It's a common practice to hope your Barracuda starts failing after a few years in hopes they'll simply replace it with a newer and faster version of the same model (they slow down as you and they add more rules and features to them.)

But, yes, pretty much all of 'em have VGA and PS/2 or USB connections for initial configuration.

I haven't had a chance to rip any Barracuda's apart as we just recently started to deploy them.  I got lucky my Sendio that a customer didn't want has a Core 2 Duo 6420 on the inside, 1GB ECC memory and a front panel LCD.
