Pfsense Appliance/s
-
Hello pfSense lovers,
I'm currently speaking with a couple of vendors and manufactures about building and designing pfsense ready appliances.
The goal of this project is to provide the pfSense community with an enterprise grade, low power, Data Center ready firewall appliance to run pfSense.
At this stage the following hardware specs have been put forward but not final.
Appliance 1:
CPU: Intel Core i5-3470T
CHIPSET: Intel B75
RAM: 8GB DDR3 (Non-ECC)
DISK: Intel SLC 24Gb mSATA SSD
NETWORK: 6x Intel 82574L RJ45, 2x Intel I350 SFP (with bypass) Total 8
CONSOLE: 1x RJ45
USB2: 2x Front
I/O: 12PIN Onboard VGA (rear mounted), 2x Mini Pci-e (1 used for mSATA), 1x SimCard Slot, 1x CompactFlash
POWER: 250W Flex Power Supply (not hot-swappable)
CASE: 1U Rack Mountable with custom pfSense front labelAppliance 2:
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1265L V2
CHIPSET: Intel B75
RAM: 16GB DDR3 (Non-ECC)
DISK: Intel SLC 24Gb mSATA SSD
NETWORK: 6x Intel 82574L RJ45, 2x Intel I350 SFP (with bypass) Total 8
CONSOLE: 1x RJ45
USB2: 2x Front
I/O: 12PIN Onboard VGA (Rear mounted), 2x Mini Pci-e (1 used for mSATA), 1x SimCard Slot, 1x CompactFlash
POWER: 250W Flex Power Supply (not hot-swappable)
CASE: 1U Rack Mountable with custom pfSense front labelPricing and availability is something we are still discussing, but at this stage the estimated sale price will be around $899 US for Appliance 1 and $1099 US for Appliance 2.
Pictures is something I'm working on providing once I obtain a sample product.
I'd really like some feedback from anyone who think's they could be interested or have any comments.
cheers,

I think it might be nice to have a few more options for pre-built appliances like that. The pfsense store does not offer that many pre-built solutions, so many having a few more option, may help those that are new to pfsense or are intimidated by it to give it a try.
Whether or not pfsense offers these to be pre-built or not, it may be nice to have a list of some server builds to help those that are looking into settings up pfsense. There is a vast majority of help in the forum though, especially in the hardware forum. the guys here are pretty good about answering questions and people post their own builds a lot too.
As far as enterprise level hardware goes, I think it would be great way to help those people who would be pushing at using pfsense at their workplace.

Curious as to what motherboard you are using, also did you consider the Q75 / Q77 version of it?
Having vPro on one of the built in NICs can be handy for managing the machine (somewhat) remotely vs a serial console, granted make sure it is well documented to only plug that in to a trusted LAN.
Noticed you are sticking to 35W / 45W cpus, did you try any "55W" dual cores? (particularly to shave costs on the cheaper unit) I find that generally those do not run as hot as the TDP would indicate.
