Hey guys…
Back on the hunt :/Noticed that the SGS5420 works with the older version of pfSense...
However, there's no mention of the 5460 or the 5640.
Wondering if anyone had any encounter with these and if they are still running on a x86 platform and not ASIC.I like the 5440 as it has 4 open PCI-( X or e ? ) slots that I can either go to 10GBe cards or Dual/Quad port Gigabit cards.
Also since its based on average ATX boards they can be easily upgraded to something much faster to meet the ever growing environment.I'm looking at 10-15 users on a Gigabit service ( squid/ HAVP / Avahi and so on )

Also Keep in mind that the 5420 is 10/100 while the 5440/5460 and up are gigabit
Looks like it maybe the motherboard maybe interchangeable with SuperMicro X7DBE…

grab AIMB-272 and i5-2520m off ebay. ~$100 and pretty darn quick.
Has one x16 slot and a mini-pcie slot that you can sit a dual port nic in as well I believe.

However!I would rather have a drop in board and not have to worry about modding the case. Plus on top of that the 4 slots in the back are low profile and would make create another headache at this point.

Well if you need the extra slots I could understand. These boards are worth $300+ new and are not very old. They still are technically in warranty but you cannot use it. X7DBE is very old, LGA775 infact. These ones are sandybridge and have ikvm using intel vpro as well as all the other vpro features.
I have 4 currently and would buy more if I had more funds available.
You could look at other supermicro boards but nothing comes close for value.

The reasons you might use an appliance like this do not include having recent hardware. ;)
They include the nice rack-mount enclosure, LCD and cursor controls, large number of interfaces, very cheap!There are still significant people using the Firebox X-Core boxes and those have a Celeron from the Pentium 3 era for the above reasons.

Expandability is one thing. You only have 1 x 16 and a mini-pci on the mitx board I mentioned. Impossible to squeeze in much more. Still that is a quad port pci-e + 2 additional gig ports off a mini pcie to low pro slot.
Full ip kvm, serial over lan and other features are nothing to sneeze at. Especially when the i5-2520m could run pfSense in a VM and still beat the snot out of older hardware. There is also power consumption to look at thought maybe that isn't a concern for you.

I have a dedicated 16port IP KVM in the rack, but for what is worth i rarely ever use it as most of the servers have RDC or ILO present which i can log into and view it what way. The way i look at it is the case and power supply is probably the only thing that is going to remain untouched ( maybe not even the case ) as for what im looking at even a single 3GHz Duo Core Xeon will do more than i will ever need it. And then i can still add in a 10GBe Myricom card as well as 2 quad port HP NICs.
For $100-150 you cant even find a decent rackmount case as Steve has mentioned it…
