Asus Essentio Series - ethernet connection not found in 1 of the 2
-
Hi,
I'm trying to install pfsence 2.02 on a Asus Essentio Series.
It install everything well but it only find one ethernet connection.
This computer only have onboard ethernet 10/100 so i put a new one, 1gigabite. Now i have 2 ethernet connection on this computer.
The one he find is the one new i put there, the onboard one is the one he dont find it at all.Have i done something wrong in the instalation ?
Or do i have to do something so he can finaly find the other ethernet ?Best Regards

Exactly what Asus model are you using?
Can you see what on-board NIC chip it's using? All the supported drivers are included in the kernel so you shouldn't need to do anything.

Hi,
Im using a Asus Essentio Series M11
generaly it detects both ethernet but this time…
Do i have to install with all ethernets cables off or i need to instal with them on ?
Any other sugestion or thing i can do ? Or its in the instalation that i'm doping something wrong ?btw if he dont detect one why he let me install pfsense or evan with none he install anyway ?
Best Regards

Is that the M11AA, M11BB, something else? Does it not have a part number like CM6***?
When you say it generally detect both cards do you mean under a different OS?
You can run pfSense with one NIC as an appliance (DNS, DHCP, VPN) or by using VLANs to get multiple interfaces.

Yes its says M11 BB.
I generaly install and format HD so there is no OS on it besides pfsense.
The computers where generaly old ones with the old 10/100 ethernet.
This one is a new PC, and comes only with one ethernet so i bought another one.
Its a TP-LINK PCI-E
Link of it - http://images.dipol.com.pl/pict/n2998+++++.jpgThe on-board dont says nothing about it. Just M11 BB
Do i have to manual enable something so he can detect ?
I have try any old version of pfsence and the same thing happen.Best Regards

btw any chance i'm doing anything wrong in the istalation so he cant recognise one of the ethernet ?
Or chould o try a new version and what one and the link to download ?Best Regards

Ok, so the TP-Link TG-3468 looks to be a Realtek RTL8111 card (there are 3 revisions of it though) but that chipset came in many versions, 8111A to 8111G at least.
Looking at the drivers available for the M11BB it looks like the on-board card is an RTL8111E which I would have expected to be supported.
Is there some reason you are using 2.0.2 and not 2.1.2?
It may be that the NIC has been updated to an 'F' or 'G' in which case you would need newer drivers than ship with nay pfSense release. There are a number of posts here on the forum to which people have attached updated kernel modules that do support newer Realtek cards. Alternatively you could try a 2.2 snapshot which will have much newer drivers but remeber that they are still in alpha at this time.
Edit: Here's a 64bit module: https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=65355.45

So 2.1.2 is better then 2.0.2 ? More drivers on that new versium ?
If so where can i download that versium ? In the pfsence site ?I have 2.0.2 because its the one they gave to me to install, i have try a old versium but that have less drivers so…
And that versium 2.1.2 will have drivers for that missing ethernet ?
And the instalation will be +/- the same ?Best Regards

2.1.2 in the latest release version, you should be using that unless you have a good reason not to. It doesn't have any newer Realtek drivers as far as I know but it does have some updated drivers (Intel). Installing this is identical to 2.0.2.
https://www.pfsense.org/download/mirror.php?section=downloads2.2 is development version which is built on FreeBSD 10 with much newer drivers. It is still in Alpha so some things don't work and new snapshots may contain new bugs etc. However there are many people running and testing it. You can get it here: http://snapshots.pfsense.org/
